Report details sexual abuse by more than 300 priests in Pennsylvania's Catholic Church

A new grand jury report says that internal documents from six Catholic dioceses in Pennsylvania show that more than 300 "predator priests" have been credibly accused of sexually abusing more than 1,000 child victims.

"We believe that the real number of children whose records were lost or who were afraid ever to come forward is in the thousands," the grand jury report says. "Priests were raping little boys and girls, and the men of God who were responsible for them not only did nothing; they hid it all. For decades. Monsignors, auxiliary bishops, bishops, archbishops, cardinals have mostly been protected; many, including some named in this report, have been promoted." The grand jury described the church's methods as "a playbook for concealing the truth" after FBI agents identified a series of practices they found in diocese files. The lengthy report, released Tuesday afternoon, investigates clergy sexual abuse dating to 1947 in six dioceses: Allentown, Erie, Greensburg, Harrisburg, Pittsburgh and Scranton.

It truly is sickening, maddening, infuriating. And some of them (that silver-haired snake Wuerl comes to mind) are still very much in CYA mode.

The Shapiro report goes back to the 1940's. I was surprised to learn that only two of the 300-plus priests identified by the grand jury were involved in abuse in the past 10 years, and these had been promptly reported to the police by their dioceses.

Legal or not, it's exploitation and sacrilege. Filthy sin. Every unchaste priest must go.

“ it seems as though you have contempt for the Catholic Church as a whole.

The issues are systemic in the church hierarchy, starting from the top down - the Vatican is not only rife with gays, but they are known and accepted and have been under multiple popes.

Their gay sex and drug parties are widely reported in Italian media - and they work at the Vatican still.

Why?

There is hardly anything new about this. This goes back centuries — since before there was even a United States of America or an American legal system to contend with.

The Catholic Church endures because its spiritual foundations are strong and because the truly faithful both among the leadership and laity have sustained the church for 1500 plus years. All the incredible saints from St. Augustine to Thomas Aquinas to St. Catherine of Siena and Francis of Assissi to the incredible men and women of present-day —> figures whose lives and testimonies even Protestants revere and identify with. The crimes at the top can’t bring the faith down. Sorry.

I am a life long Catholic. I love the Church. I profess the Creed. I will die, God willing, a devout son of the RC Church.
I think the United States Government should open a RICO probe based on the PA GJ report.

It does go all the way to the top. Rumour has it the gay mafia pushed Benedict out because he wanted to take action on pedophiliac priests.

It may be that Francis was appointed to shield them.

It does go all the way to the top.

The Church was in this same mess during the Italian Renaissance. The Church needs a Pius V.

Any time any man--- cleric or otherwise ---- makes a minor an object of his lust, it is a filthy crime. I am infuriated by this type of vile, disordered behavior.

But I think a lot of people missed some salient points in the Shapiro report. One is that of all 300 priests named (not tried or convicted, mind you, but named --- the accusations go back to the 1940's and half of them are dead) how many were implicated in the past 10 years?

Two.

That's right, two.

And those two had already been turned over to the police by their dioceses.

Now, I don't know what the charges on those two were, but if it was the worst of the worst --- if they sodomized minors--- I think they should be shot.

That's what a just sentence would be.

But do you know what the record was over the past two years? I'll tell you. Over the past two years, .005 percent of the Catholic clergy have had a credible accusation made against them.

So people who say stuff like this ("There is no future in the catholic church for normal people who don't want their children raped by their local priest") --- ought to sit down and actually look at the numbers.

That is not too much to ask.

And let justice be done.

The issue isn’t whether it is new.

It is evil.

It is accepted at the Vatican, instead of being condemned, and the evil thrown out.

Until that changes, it is just talk.

What does that have to do with anything? Marriage is not a cure either for homosexuality or for pedophilia.

Ask Mrs. Alfred Kinsey.

And don't be foisting off sick pedos on decent women.

They could do a report on the public school teachers rates of raping students...but they don’t want to and wont. They WOULD if they really cared about what they are pretending to care about.

the Lutheran church as well as other protestant groups are Catholic light....they demand so little, so little asked of them, rules arbitrary...

Catholics are being attacked for wrong doing but mostly, because its a big church with a lot of $$$$$....

as it says in the bible....cast the first stone....

I’m not saying this isn’t bad but if the pop of the U.S. is roughly 300,000000 then 1000 is 0.00033333333333333% of that.

But the story makes the Catholic Church seem as if the entire Church is made up of drooling pedo’s.

Just saying.

Of course, the ones who are guilty should be arrested, and definitely are deserving of the harshest punishment.

It is a terrible thing to have taken advantage of a child. They have betrayed the trust given to them to shepherd the little lambs.

Donohue's article is well written and disputes all the points that the media seem to trumpet...

but not many of the Catholic haters, even here on FR, will read it....

POpe Benedict XVI booted out 400 priests in two years and sacked a couple of bishops as well.

I don't know the whole story about why he abdicated, but "rumor has it" (take it with a grain of salt) that he'd received a 300-page report that revealed that some of his most trusted allies were Judases. He was shaken by VatiLeaks and realized he didn't know who he could trust. Surrounded by wolves, he hadn't the strength (he was 86) to play Private Detective, D.A., judge and jury on all of them.

So one way or another, they forced him out.

Pray for him. I suspect we won't get the Truth this side of Eternity. But God is stronger than the wolves, and justice will come.
