I don't wish to heap conspiracy theories onto the bonfire, but O'Brien's demise seems conveniently timed.

Bishop O’’Obrien was our diocese’s bishop. Yes, he did cover up and/or ignore multiple instances of sexual misconduct by priests, including our priest, Monsignor Dale. An even worse scandal was centered around Bishop Obrien involved in a hit and run accident, he killed a pedestrian.
Dale was eventually removed from our parish, prosecuted, defrocked and excommunicated.
