October Devotion: The Holy Rosary
This feast was established by Pope Pius V to commemorate the great victory of the Christian army against the Turks in the Battle of Lepanto in 1571.
All soldiers on the battlefield prayed the Rosary for three hours and the wind has shifted in their favor. They were able to defeat an army three times bigger, in one of the greatest naval victory in history.
Pope Pius V named this the Feast of Our Lady of Victories, to be celebrated on October 7th.
In 1573, Pope Gregory XIII changed the title of this memorial to Feast of the Holy Rosary.
Pope Paul VI established the form that we celebrate this feast today, in 1969 under the name “Our Lady of the Rosary”.
“The celebration of this day invites all to mediate upon the mysteries of Christ, following the example of the Blessed Virgin Mary who was so singularly associated with the incarnation, passion and glorious resurrection of the Son of God.”

1. Sign of the Cross: In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
2. The Apostles Creed: I BELIEVE in God, the Father almighty, Creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended to the dead. On the third day He rose again. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God, the Father Almighty. From thence He shall come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.
3. The Lord's Prayer: OUR Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen.
4. (3) Hail Mary: HAIL Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou amongst women and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now, and in the hour of our death. Amen. (Three times)
5. Glory Be: GLORY be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit. As it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen.
Fatima Prayer: Oh, my Jesus, forgive us our sins, save us from the fires of hell, lead all souls to heaven, especially those in most need of your mercy.
Announce each mystery, then say 1 Our Father, 10 Hail Marys, 1 Glory Be and 1 Fatima prayer. Repeat the process with each mystery.
End with the Hail Holy Queen:
Hail, Holy Queen, Mother of Mercy, our life, our sweetness and our hope! To thee do we cry, poor banished children of Eve! To thee do we send up our sighs, mourning and weeping in this vale of tears! Turn then, most gracious advocate, thine eyes of mercy towards us; and after this, our exile, show unto us the blessed fruit of thy womb, Jesus!
O clement, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary! Pray for us, O holy Mother of God, that we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.

Old Calendar: St. Edward, king, confessor
St. Edward (1003-1066), called the Confessor, was the grandson of St. Edward, king and martyr, and became king of England at the age of forty-seven. As king he was noted for his gentleness, humility, detachment and angelic purity. He preserved perfect chastity in his wedded life. So little was his heart set on riches that he freely dispensed his goods at the palace gate to the sick and poor. His reign was one of almost continuous peace. The people were prosperous and ruined churches were rebuilt. All spoke affectionately of the wise measures of the "good King Edward." According to the 1962 Missal of St. John XXIII the Extraordinary Form of the Roman Rite, today is his feast.
Also today in Fatima in 1917, the marvelous miracle of the sun took place in the sky before 70,000 witnesses.
St. Edward
Edward, the last king of the Anglo-Saxons, a grandson of the martyr-king Edward, passed his youth in exile with his uncle, a Norman leader. In an environment of sin he preserved innocence of life. Called to the throne of England in 1042, he sought to put into practice the Christian ideals for a ruler, with the help of God's grace. His first efforts were directed toward a renewal of religion in the hearts of his people. Priests were invited into his kingdom, churches were built. Yielding to pressure, he married, but is said to have retained virginity during his whole married life.
His favorite saint was St. John the Evangelist; he would not deny any request asked in his name. One day the Beloved Disciple appeared to him in the form of a beggar and asked alms in the name of the fourth evangelist; as Edward had no ready money, he gave up the ring on his finger. Shortly thereafter St. John returned the ring with the message that his death was near. The king ordered public prayers to be said for himself and died in the Lord on the day foretold, January 5, 1066.

Common of the Blessed Virgin Mary
Blessed are those who hear the word of God and observe it. (Luke 11:28)
No wonder this woman is excited. Jesus has just shown that he has power to cast out evil spirits (Luke 11:14). That’s pretty impressive! Still, the woman seems underinformed. She praises Jesus by remarking how blessed his mother is to have him for a son. But there is more to Jesus than just the story of a local boy who gains celebrity. So Jesus responds by asking her to look not only at his earthly mother but also at his heavenly Father.
Natural ties between family members are special. Yet there is another kind of relationship Jesus wants us to experience. We belong to more than just our earthly family; we are part of the Church, the family of God! The old saying goes that blood is thicker than water. But when it comes to the spiritual life, nothing is thicker than the water of Baptism. We are bound to one another with spiritual ties that transcend race, social status, and homeland. Our family even transcends space and time—through all the saints who are right now in heaven praying for us. Best of all, it transcends creation itself—our Father is the eternal Creator of all that is.
The Church is God’s gift to us. It’s his way of keeping us together as a family. When we gather every Sunday, we hear “the word of God,” and we are invited to “observe it” (Luke 11:28). This is how God ensures that we’ll adopt his worldview—as any good father tries to do for his children. He teaches us his way so that we will grow up to be just like him.
Parents know that time spent gathered around the table is one of the best ways to cement their family’s bonds. A common meal is also one of the best ways for brothers and sisters to grow in their love and affection for each other. This is how God thinks too. That’s why he asks us to gather around his table and share in his heavenly meal. Taught by the Lord, fed by the Lord, and supported by one another—this is what it means to be the Church. This is why we are “blessed” beyond belief (Luke 11:28).

"Blessed is the womb that carried you"
I beg you to listen to what Christ had to say when he stretched out his hand towards his disciples: “Here are my mother and my brethren”; and, “whoever does the will of my Father in heaven is my brother and my sister and my mother” (Mt 12:49-50). Are we to take it from this that the Virgin Mary did not do the will of the Father, she who by faith believed, by faith conceived?... Indeed and indeed she did the Father's will and... consequently, blessed is Mary who bore her Lord in her body before she gave him birth.
See if it isn't as I say. The Lord was journeying on and the crowds were following him. He did a work of divine power and this woman in the crowd cried out: “Blessed is the womb that bore you and the breasts that you sucked.” But they must not think that blessedness lay in bodily relationship, so what did the Lord answer? “Blessed rather are those who hear the word of God and keep it.” Therefore Mary is blessed because she “heard the word of God and kept it.” Her mind was filled more fully with Truth than her womb by his flesh. Christ is the truth, Christ is made flesh: Christ the truth is in Mary's mind, Christ made flesh is in her womb. Greater is that which is in her mind than that which she carried in her womb. Mary is holy. Mary is blessed indeed!...
Brothers, listen very closely: you are members of Christ's body and you are the body of Christ (1Co 12:27)... “Whoever hears and does the will of God is my brother, and. sister, and mother”... We have a common heritage and Christ's heart of love would not be separated from us, though he is the Only-Begotten: he wouldl have us to be heirs of his Father and co-heirs with himself (Rm 8:17).
