My wife and I experienced this first hand a couple months ago. Good friends, married for a generation, suddenly broke up. Seems the wife decided she was no longer in love with her husband because she loved the clown she had been in an adulterous affair with, and they were planning their future together. she left a path of destruction that included devastated adult children, devastated husband, and frankly, a lot of devastated friends. My wife and I talked to a lot of people, did a lot of research hoping to help them, but their marriage was probably over at that point. I think our marriage is probably a little stronger, but, as I admitted to my wife, I would never encourage a man to invest that much of his life and emotion to marriage knowing his wife could be perfectly comfortable walking away at middle age. And I know men do stupid stuff like this as well.
