Historic Anglican-Oriental Orthodox Agreed Statement on the Holy Spirit Published [Filioque]

The historic Agreed Statement between Anglican and Oriental Orthodox theologians on the Procession and Work of the Holy Spirit has been published. The statement was signed last October after lengthy discussions by members of the Anglican Oriental-Orthodox International Commission (AOOIC). It was published at this year’s meeting of AOOIC, which took place last week in Lebanon. The agreed statement is part of a series of work which has helped to heal the oldest continuing division within Christianity, a schism that goes back centuries. At the core of Agreed Statement is the controversial Filioque clause – appended to the Nicene Creed by the Latin Western tradition causing a schism between the Oriental Orthodox Churches and the western Churches that was inherited by the Anglican tradition. The clause says that the Holy Sprit proceedes “from the Son” (Jesus) as well as the Father. The Agreed Statement says that Anglicans should omit the clause.

This year’s meeting took place just weeks after the death of Metropolitan Bishoy, the Oriental Orthodox Co-Chair of the dialogue. Metropolitan Bishoy co-signed the statement at last year’s meeting alongside the Anglican Co-Chair, the Bishop of St Asaph Gregory Cameron. The published Statement has been dedicated to Metropolitan Bishoy, “monk, bishop, theologian, champion of the Orthodox faith and unity of the Church.”

At this year’s meeting, the Coptic Archbishop of London, Archbishop Angaelos, was unanimously elected as the Oriental Orthodox Co-Chair – a move welcomed by the Anglican members.

This would be hysterically funny, if it wasn’t so tragic. An organization that pretends to ordain women and marry homosexuals is discussing Trinitarian theology with one of the ancient Christian churches. And everybody is taking this seriously.

Lord Jesus Christ save us.

Yes, I think they have a few things to take care of before they can contemplate the finer points of the Holy Spirit.

I believe the Roman C. Church also has a similar agreement. Turns out the ancient disagreement was really one of semantics. Greek has several words similar to “proceeds” or “comes from” with different shades of meaning whereas Latin (and Western languages) does not. If we were to say the Holy Spirit proceeds from the Father and THROUGH the Son, the Orthodox could agree to that. Western arguments are that scripture speaks several times of the Father sending the Holy Spirit and of the Son sending the Holy Spirit....where in the West made “send” a synonym of “proceeds” the Greeks saw “proceeds” as referring to ultimate source as the Father (even though all Persons of the Trinity are ultimate.)

The Orthodox saw the addition of “and the Son” to the Holy Spirit proceeding from the Father as taking away from the full personhood of the Holy Spirit—and the role of the Father. The Western church added “and the Son” (the filioque) to combat the predominant heresy in the AD 400s & 500s, Arianism—which didn’t acknowledge the full deity of Christ.

It was never agreed to in an ecumenical council—and became the claimed proximate cause of splitting the Roman, Western, Church from those Churches of the East in AD 1054.

Therefore agreements like this are a big deal—greatly aiding Christian unity.

Actually, when it comes to the Eastern Orthodox, the “finer points of the Holy Spirit” are what divided West from the East in the first place....since AD 1054.

Ooh,cool! I wonder how our brothers and sisters in the east feel about the ECUSA now calling the Holy Spirit “She”? And making the apostles “fishers of PEOPLE”?

The US Episcopal denomination (TEC) accounts for something like 2% of the world-wide Anglican Communion, of which probably 90% are orthodox, conservative Christians. Think about that...the VAST majority of Anglicans in the world are bible-believing Christians (even though denominations like TEC are not).

Due to missionaries over the last 200 years, most of that 90% are in the developing world. There are more Anglicans in the world than any other Protestant group. An agreement with orthodox Anglicans (which again, is the vast majority) and the Eastern Orthodox is a big deal.

The clause says that the Holy Spirit proceeds “from the Son” (Jesus) as well as the Father.

Well i'm so glad that was cleared up

Ill just leave these right here in case they get confused in the future !

Gen 1:2
And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.

And Jesus being full of the Holy Ghost returned from Jordan, and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness,

Luk 10:21
In that hour Jesus rejoiced in spirit, and said, I thank thee, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that thou hast hid these things from the wise and prudent, and hast revealed them unto babes: even so, Father; for so it seemed good in thy sight.

By the way its in us believers to just so they know they don't have a monopoly on the holy spirit or the holy ghost or god or jesus

Rom 8:11
But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, he that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by his Spirit that dwelleth in you.

Eph 1:17
That the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give unto you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of him:

My question to the mainstream churches is why ? why do they only teach half the bible the fear and condemnation never the blessings its like they try to scare you into submission ! I love my God and Jesus and the blessings he bestows upon me and mine he wants us to be happy and in joy all the time its not rocket science you have to teach people the whole bible

The teachings of the bible isn't a secret thank God its a path it's why this country was created I mean come on what was the mayflower compact but a covenant to this country being christian

In the name of God, Amen. We whose names are under-written, the loyal subjects of our dread sovereign Lord, King James, by the grace of God, of Great Britain, France, and Ireland King, Defender of the Faith, etc.

Having undertaken, for the glory of God, and advancement of the Christian faith, and honor of our King and Country, a voyage to plant the first colony in the northern parts of Virginia, do by these presents solemnly and mutually, in the presence of God, and one of another, covenant and combine our selves together into a civil body politic, for our better ordering and preservation and furtherance of the ends aforesaid; and by virtue hereof to enact, constitute, and frame such just and equal laws, ordinances, acts, constitutions and offices, from time to time, as shall be thought most meet and convenient for the general good of the Colony, unto which we promise all due submission and obedience. In witness whereof we have hereunder subscribed our names at Cape Cod, the eleventh of November [New Style, November 21], in the year of the reign of our sovereign lord, King James, of England, France, and Ireland, the eighteenth, and of Scotland the fifty-fourth. Anno Dom. 1620.

Jhn 20:22
And when he had said this, he breathed on them, and saith unto them, Receive ye the Holy Ghost:

This is not with the “Eastern Orthodox” but the “Oriental Orthodox”. The “Oriental Orthodox” split with the rest of Christendom after the Council of Chalcedon in AD 453.

The Oriental Orthodox are perhaps the most ethnic and least theological branch of chrstianity. The fact that they are enthusiastic members of both the NCC and WCC tells you all you need to know about them.

Oriental Orthodox, not Eastern Orthodox. Two different things.
