Informed speculation. Viganò would have known of
The Vatican's intelligence resources and that they'd likely becoming after him.
I also imagine that there are LOTS of Catholics who consider Viganò a Saint for what he did and would be willing to die for the Faith...and him.
You don't attain Viganò's level of power in the Church without getting to know a few characters in the wings. He is smarter than Snowden: I doubt Viganò did what he did without a plan.
