‘The Handmaid’s Tale:’ Baptism Just Being Sanctified By ‘Holier-Than-Thou Child Molesters’

We’re all perfectly aware that Hulu’s The Handmaid’s Tale doesn’t like Christianity. Why else would it paint the religion as a part of a theological dictatorship where women are treated like cattle, child brides are legal and men beat their wives? After all, it’s not like the show’s going to acknowledge those are very real things in the Islamic world today. Instead, we get a moment trashing Catholic priests and Christians right before taking part in a baptism in the latest episode.

The June 12 episode “God Bless The Child” starts with preparation for the dedication of all the newborn babies in Gilead to God in a pseudo-baptism ceremony. While walking to the ceremony, June (Elizabeth Moss) thinks back to the time she had her first newborn daughter baptized in a church years ago.

The sacrament included her husband Luke (O.T. Fagbenle), her best friend and her baby’s godmother Moira (Samira Wiley), and June’s activist mother Holly (Cherry Jones). Although it’s admirable that June wanted her daughter baptized, everyone else was lot less admirable about the whole situation, especially Holly. Being a feminist, she didn’t want her granddaughter to be "sanctified by a bunch of holier-than-thou child molesters.”

June: Huh? What’re you looking at, huh? Who’s my pretty girl, huh? Hannah banana.

Holly: There she is!

June: Hi!

Moira: Look at that dress. You are rocking that dress baby girl.

Holly: Oh, hello sweetheart. My little darling angel. Yes, you are.

June: What?

Luke: He missed his train.

June: Ugh.

Moira: Fucking Jerry. You know, he is the worst possible choice for a godfather.

Luke: Should we just do it without him?

June: Mhmm.

Holly: Oh, just cancel. It’s a sign.

June: What?

Holly: Sweetheart, Hannah does not need to be sanctified by a bunch of holier-than-thou child molesters.

June: Okay, a little louder, Mother.

Holly: Do you think that your father would care? He spent a hell of a lot more time at Fenway than he ever did at Mass. You cannot let religion control your choices. That’s what they all want.

June: Mom, shhh!

Moira: They are not too thrilled that I’m the fairy godmother.

June: Shhh.

Moira: Hey.

June: Oh. Oh boy.

Holly: That's another sign.

Fortunately, they did go through with the baptism. Unfortunately, it continued without a godfather and with the openly lesbian Moira. Considering where the country ends up, the show clearly favors Holly’s side. After all, strict religious interpretation seems to control everyone’s choices in Gilead. They certainly didn't need to include the false idea that sexual abuse is unique to Catholic priests to make their point about religion.

In fact, the sacrament of baptism itself is tainted in this episode. The act of dedicating a child to the Church in Gilead is now connected with a creepy authoritarian nation forcibly taking children and oppressing women. Even though June did willingly allow her daughter to be baptized before, it doesn’t change the fact that the series portrays this as the same thing the evil men controlling Gilead want. If baptism isn’t being blessed by child molesters, it’s a tool of evil authoritarians. Even good baptisms are scarred with no godfathers and lesbian godmothers. How is baptism supposed to make us feel after that?

The answer is, it isn’t supposed to make us feel anything. Nothing is sacred anymore, especially religion.

BTW...the character who said this? June’s mom? She was pro choice, helped women get abortions, birth control, helped men get vacectomys. Gilead sent her strait to the colonies.

A little bit on The Colonies..

Not only is the book Christophobic, the fact that it is so widely read proves liberals are Christophobic.

The book paints Christians as wannabe-Taliban. And it is assigned by many liberal professors who use it to show what your mild Christian neighbors really want to do. Today, they fight paying your abortion. Tomorrow, they’ll rape you and force you to bear their children.

Elizabeth Moss is a Scientology cultist bigot. She has no business judging anyone’s “religion.”

Islamophobia is not a real phenomenon: The fear of Mohammedans is rational and justified by nearly 1400 years of Jihad.

Christophobia is a real phenomenon: The fear is an irrational and unjustified projection of their own totalitarian impulses onto Christians.

The things they would cite - Salem Trials, Spanish Inquisition - were isolated events, exceptions to the rule. And the Crusades were a focused response to over 400 years of general invasion.

Jihad is the pervasive, unending rule with Mohammedanism - and Islam is the oppressor of women worldwide.

Biblical Christianity fostered Western Civilization, including the protection and empowerment of women.

Uh, sexual abuse is NOT just limited to Catholic priests. There was a recent article here decrying the epidemic occurring in the SBC community.

It’s also a pretty cartoonish depiction of ‘religion.’

Than you, YC.

I'm going to make a long day of it, today, and trek to Knoxville for the ordination of our transitional deacons. Our bishop is (---pause long over what to say --- )is, at least, not a wolf and not a jackal, although (---pause over what to say___). He is pro-life, that's the biggie, and distinguished himself in the midst of his USCCB brethren by saying he would do a 915 on Andrew Cuomo or any other Catholic politician who dared to feed our children into the meat-grinder.

He just built a new Cathedral, spent a lot of money on it to make it beautiful, but I'll defend him on this because he expects it to stand for hundreds of years to the glory of God in East Tennessee. He's looking to the future. And He does want all his new clergy --- our tiny Tennessee diocese probably got a lot more per capita than most dioceses---to know the TLM and sees that as something that continues into the future, too.

So for this, I, the lowliest of catechists, the lowliest Mama in the Mater et Magistra --- I thank God.

I’d say that fear of a religion that is murdering people in the name of said religion at hundreds of times the rate of anything else both exists and is rational.

Islam is a totalitarian social and political system. That they kill moderates and reformers will prevent it from reforming.

The classic feminist is being portrayed as the enlightened martyr, while the world goes to heck because her mild daughter isn’t an activist.
They are going to make June save her daughter and the world by overthrowing the patriarchy of Gilead.

‘Holier-Than-Thou Child Molesters’

Well, there’s a phrase you don’t see much.

‘Biblical Christianity fostered Western Civilization’

for 1600 years, Christianity made little movement toward relinquishing the concept of absolutism, or the divine right of monarchists, of kings being subservient solely to God...it was the principles of the 18th century Enlightenment that reprised Greco-Roman notions of democratic rule that fostered modern Western thought...

Judica me Deus, et discerne causam meam de gente non sancta...

ah, the beauty of the TLM, back when I still accepted mysteries...
