Yes, due to a certain poster who went to excess ("The Catholic bashing here got out of hand"), and thus
The posting was to excess, though such can be being provoked by Catholic posting the time. I think the push to protect Caths was mainly due to the whining of a certain po$ter whom we see little from now.
And which RCs saw/see as favoring them, who much use FR as a informational and apologetical mouthpiece, though since that time Jim has pulled some provocative RC threads, and he at least opined that Francis "is wrong about a lot of things.would do well to stick to his knitting."
What constitutes "Catholic bashing" was purposely left somewhat ambiguous, but (in seeking to understand the position) I see that he has stated,

I don’t so I avoid the place as much as possible. And I don’t belong to any organized religion.

I’ve always been up front about it. FR is pro-God. That is the one true Judeo-Christian God of the Holy Bible. We will worship none other. And no false gospel shall be taught here as Truth.
And he opposed Mormonism (which I surmise seems once used FR to promote itself), stating that Free Republic is a pro-God site. The one and only true Judeo-Christian God as taught to us by KJV with no additional editing or books of fiction. I have zero faith in Joseph Smith or his so-called Mormon religion and do not want it taught on FR as gospel. Joe Smith was a false prophet and his book is false gospel (look it up in KJV). Those who cannot live with that are certainly free to post elsewhere.
And stated "Mormons should post elsewhere."
But broadly,
stated that Catholics, Protestants, Evangelicals, Jews, etc, are not the enemy. ALL conservative pro-life, pro-family pro-America believers in our one true Judeo-Christian God are our guests, friends and allies in this effort, so please don't attack your allies! Attacks on religion are not going to convert anyone. Please save your ammunition for the enemy.
As a conservative site, Free Republic is pro-God, pro-life, pro-family, pro-Constitution, pro-Bill of Rights, pro-gun, pro-limited government, pro-private property rights, pro-limited taxes, pro-capitalism, pro-national defense, pro-freedom, and-pro America. We oppose all forms of liberalism, socialism, fascism, pacifism, totalitarianism, anarchism, government enforced atheism, abortionism, feminism, homosexualism, racism, wacko environmentalism, judicial activism, etc.Hope this helps to at least clarify.
