Terri Saved: Celebrate, but Not Too Long
Patriot Paradox ^ | Nick Queen

Posted on 10/21/2003 3:48:29 PM PDT by sonsofliberty2000

Gov. Bush today has finally got, with the assistance from the House and Senate in Florida, permission to save the life of Terri Schiavo, despite the intentions of her husband to end her life. We should celebrate, thank God and then get right back to the action people. I have no apprhension in saying that Michael Schiavo will immediately start trying to overturn this, and I do mean fast. Back to the battle stations! Terri's family needs to be allowed to go back and see her and the heat needs turned up on Michael.

"Isn't there a law saying immediate family MUST be allowed in to see family members in a hospital? I don't see how Schiavo can legally bar them.

I don't know the answer to that question, but I doubt that there is such a law because what if the immediate family included a husband like evil Michael, or a family member who who might further harm the patient?

Good find about Bobby. He'd make a good witness in a criminal case against the fiend Michael, wouldn't he.

I like your thinking on changing Terri's last name to her maiden name. That would create a positive start for her new life. I just hope that the hideously evil Michael will lose guardianship immediately so that he'll have no place at all in her life.

I hope and pray that Michael will fail at any other attempt to call the shots for Terri.

"Elected legislators, giving a law to be signed by an elected governor, to overturn a corrupt judge, is democracy turned on its head?"

That's liberal speak Cat. Only THEY are supposed to be able to turn democracy on its head. That aside, I am thankful that many were able to put life above party.

I agree. But the uncertainty is that we don't know that to be the case either. Uncertainty demands we err on the side of life, but I the same uncertainty means that we could be completely wrong about M Shiavo, and that he may be indeed acting on her wishes.

Did Terri request that, or is there any reason she would wish that, if she ever be "on tubes" she should be kept in a cold dark room with minimal visitation, and that her parents should be forbidden from videographing or tape recording her? And that her husband should refuse to divorce her but have a couple kids by another 'fiancée' anyway?

As distasteful as the guy appears to be, it does not mean he cannot be right. Hopefully there will be a semi-public airing of the facts, as cockroaches scatter under the light of day.

Michael is a pathalogical liar. His statements and actions consistently contradict each other. If his wife is and will always be truly unaware of her surroundings (as he claims), why should she object to his divorcing her? And why should she object (much less "get agitated" as he claims) to her parents' visits?

Michael claims to have been hoping for any 'gleam of hope', while actively blocking any. He claims to have been distressed at Judge Greer's order to kill Terri, when it was he himself who requested the order.

The man is evil. His actions speak for himselves. The only question is whether he, Felos, or Greer is the most evil of the triumvirate.

She's not flat lined. It is obvious in the videos that she still has brain activity. She has some awareness. She even tries to speak in one of the videos.

I've seen brain dead and Terri is not even close to that stage. She is not drooling, she smiles, her eyes are focused and she tries to communicate with her mother and others.

Your're right. The parents need to be named her legal guardian. If she was contemplating a divorce from this man, that should be enough reason right there to give the parents guardianship.

Terri is now receiving fluids, according to this article:http://abcnews.go.com/wire/US/ap20031021_2212.html

Brain-Damaged Fla. Woman in Right-To-Die Dispute Receiving Fluids Again, Acting on Gov. Bush's Order
The Associated Press

CLEARWATER, Fla. Oct. 21 — Acting on orders from Gov. Jeb Bush, a hospital began rehydrating a brain-damaged woman Tuesday six days after her feeding tube was removed in one of the nation's longest and most bitter right-to-die battles.

Terri Schiavo was receiving the fluids after the Legislature rushed to pass a bill designed to save her life, according to her parents' lawyer. Schiavo's parents have fought to keep her alive. Her husband, Michael Schiavo, says she would rather die.

An ambulance earlier took Schiavo from a Pinellas Park hospice to Morton Plant Hospital after Bush issue an order to resume feeding her. A crowd cheered outside as she left.

* * * * * * *

Also, IMO, the way the bill was worded, the hospital and the staff are immune from prosecution (by Michael S.) for following the directive to resume nutrition and hydration. Indeed, the hospital would be negligent should they not comply with Terri's Bill.

I read this somewhere. Maybe WorldNetDaily or someplace like that.

What really irks me are the people who say, "Well, really, they should take out the feeding tube. What about her quality of life? That's no way to live."

Is it up to us to judge someone's quality of life? I am a writer. I would be devastated if I lost my arms. I'd much rather lose my legs because then I could still type. But a runner would be the exact opposite of me.

We are not allowed to judge someone's quality of life. Children living in the slums have a miserable quality of life -- are they better off dead? People with Downs Syndrome have a difficult time adjusting to "normal" society and are often cared for by their parents until they die -- are they better off dead? Stephen Hawkins has a debilitated disease and can't move or do anything for himself. He certainly can't feed himself. Is he better off dead? Would society be better off if he was dead?

I get so angry with the selfishness of others. It is not Terri's quality of life anyone cares about. It's their own perception of what they themselves would want for themselves should they find themselves in the same position.

There is a document people can get to prevent doctors from treating you. I think it's a "do not resusitate" order, a legal document, that is quick and easy to fill out. After my grandfather died, my grandmother got one. I don't really have an opinion on this, I'm torn. But clearly, Terri didn't have one and was resusitated. How do we know she doesn't think and feel just like all of us -- but simply can't communicate her thoughts and feelings?

It's not up to us to decide whether someone's quality of life is valuable.
