Condoleezza Rice on 60 Minutes Live Thread [7pm EST, Sunday 3/28]
CBS News ^ | 3-28-04 | CBS News

I was waiting for this to go up. We're about t-minus one hour from it (depending on how long Duke-Xavier goes, I guess). Too bad it's not going to be a long interview like Clarke had. I've noticed that 60 Minutes are not promoting this either. The commercial I just saw advertised the story on soccer phenom Freddy Adu, not the story on Rice or Pickering. I also discovered from the link referenced above that Rice spoke to them this morning and not yesterday as I'd heard would be the case before. Bill Kristol predicted this morning that Rice might say that if this is really such a big deal that she'll testify in public under oath as she's been badgered to do. I don't think Bill has a good track record on predicting news, so take that with a grain of salt. By the way, go Xavier-- I had Duke losing before now in my office pool bracket, but my opponents have them winning it all.

The only reason they, being the rats on the panel, want Condi to testify in public, is to try to trip Condi up on some detail to humilate her on national tv...that's jmho though.

I agree with you .. and I'm sorry that my post sounded like I was yelling at you .. I wasn't, I'm just frustrated at the way these liberals are acting

For a 63 year old man, Bradley looked like a death's head. Does anyone know if he is ill?

The Pickering piece was surprisingly fair, at least by comparison to many of their other pieces.

Powell cited Iraq-alQaeda links in his speech to the UN. Bush cited such as well. Cheney pointed out the Feith memo cited in The Weekly Standard as being the most accurate reporting to date and it certainly detailed connections between Iraq and al Qaeda. It just doesn't get much airtime when the press is busily misquoting everyone, or even making up things altogether to distract from it. occasionally they slip up, though, and get caught.

Some trivia that was nestled up amid some other misinformation from Robert Fisk of all people:

1993 : (SUDAN : BIN LADEN & HIS IRAQI ENGINEER SAAD WORK ON PORT SUDAN ROAD) Along with his Iraqi engineer, Mohamed Saad - who is now building the Port Sudan road - Mr Bin Laden blasted massive tunnels into the Zazi mountains of Bakhtiar province for guerrilla hospitals and arms dumps, then cut a mujahedin trail across the country to within 15 miles of Kabul. - by Robert Fisk, "Anti-Soviet warrior on the road to peace [Fisk interviews bin Laden (1993)],"The Independent via andrew sullivan, December 16, 1993

Bin Alden spent little time opposing the Soviets- he took a lot of money from Arab aid organizations in the name of fighting the Soviets in Afghanistan but instead put all of his efforts into fighting the Indians in Kashmir; bin Laden claime dto have build massive tunnels and so on using funding gullible people sent but when we arrived they were little more than hand dug narrow holes made by people looking for semiprecious stones; bin Laden took credit for building hospitals but they certainly didn't find too many- if any- in Afghanistan which had benefitted from his wealth and all the donations. He used the charity for building his global terrorist network instead- right under the UN's nose.

Now that I think about it, they probably did a somewhat fair piece about Pickering so they can claim they are fair and impartial, and therefore their Clarke/Rice pieces don't matter.

Does anyone have the exact passage from Woodward's book that references the President's so-called lack of "urgency"? It's maddening to hear this repeated ad-nauseum, as I'm sure it's a misguided inference on Woodward's part rather than a direct quote.

The media wants to deliver Condi to the 911 families, so they can heckle her, blame her as NSA for the attack.

Exactly.

They want that video, and they are not going to get it. Condi WILL NOT testify publicly, so get over it.

I sincerely hope she doesn't.
It would be more of a hatchet job than 60 Minutes just did on her.

The White House needs to stop cooperating with the networks, however. No more Collin Powell on Face the Nation, etc. Go over their heads like Reagan did, because they have NO intention of giving the Bush administration a fair shake.

Or maybe the comments they got last week made a difference....4 against/1 supportive shared says a lot. Apparently the ratio they received was about the same.

Even if the rationalized their not disclosing the relationship with the publisher of Clarke's book at least they admitted it.

Really think we should keep the heat on them.

I see you and I saw two different Chris Matthews shows, too.

My view was I was pleased to see Tucker Carlson have some backbone and gumption and make several excellent points that even Chris had to agree with.

What "several excellent points" did Tucker Carlson make on today's Chris Matthews show? He started to talk about the Sudan-bin Laden handoff to Clinton, but quickly got cut off by one of the other panelists. The rest of the time, he sat there mostly silent. Honestly, I must've missed the part of the show you are describing...

Amazingly, Tucker Carlson had the best response about Clarke apologizing to victims for 9-ll.

Today on Chris Mathews Sunday show, Carlson said he was appalled that people want our government to apologize for what the terrorists did.

...60 mins in not viewed as "mainstream".

I agree. Used to be mainstream, but not anymore & not for quite some time.

Wrong on both accounts--I play both.

I agree with you in regards to a feint, but I don't believe the dems have one in this case. If the administration is fearful of this perhaps they can find a way to work around it. If not so be it (that's called not ceding the higher ground without good reason).

Frankly, using poker parlance, I think it's a bluff.

That is indeed a great response (which is rare for Tucker Carlson, IMHO).
It's so good, in fact, that I'm going to repeat it in an e-mail and follow-up phone call to Ben Bradley at 60 minutes.

And the word "weak" does not describe Rice in this interview at all.

I didn't mean to imply that Condi herself was weak (she's NOT!)... I meant that to an uninformed viewer, this cBS hack-job of an interview came off as portraying Condi and the Bush administration weak, up against Richard Clarke's testimony, numerous media appearances (including more than double the time Condi had on 60 Minutes) and favorable press about his comments and about his new book.

Don't worry... President Bush definitely has my vote come November... I'm just worried about how the truth-challenged sheeple (whom we wish would just stay home on election day) see this.

very good post.. 60 minutes preaches to the choir...

This again will be a swing vote election...

Most folks have already made up their minds. I tried to watch this interview, but as usual, 60 minutes cut and pasted what they wanted.. they actually got our girl shaking a few times on EXTREME close up. the whole thing was sickening and I had to turn it off.
