There has also been excavation of a buried city under the sea off the coast of Japan. There must be many such lost cities.

I have some vague recollection that what Plato said fits the Santorini scenario nicely if various numbers he gives are divided by 10. The Minoan civilization, which was destroyed by the volcano, might have been the Atlantean civilization.
Of course, I don't really know much about Atlantis beyond the old Donovan song.

"The Minoan civilization, which was destroyed by the volcano, might have been the Atlantean civilization. " The Minoans survived for another 100+ years after Santorini on Crete . (Although they do look like they were almost wiped out by the tsunami from Santorini)

"... 'evidence of man-made structures' what is that supposed to mean?"The Antlanteans probably had statues of PINK FLAMINGOS in their front yards!

Thanks Blam. My niece pointed out the AOL version of the article to me while she was surfin' today. Google turns up a bunch of similar ones. I'll ping the list after I get home.

Atlantis 'obviously near Gibraltar'
Thursday, 20 September, 2001
BBC
Jacques Collina-Girard, from the University of the Mediterranean in Aix-en-Provence, says it could have been sited on an island close to the Strait of Gibraltar, and would have vanished below the waves about 11,000 years ago - just as Plato said it did. Collina-Girard's evidence is based on a study of sea levels that prevailed as the last Ice Age was ending. His assessment of the coral reef data shows the coastline off the southernmost tip of Spain and around Gibraltar 19,000 years ago to have been 130 metres (422 feet) below what it is today. This would have exposed an archipelago, with an island at the spot where Plato reported Atlantis to be in his work Timaeus.

Theories place Atlantis either somewhere in the Atlantic Ocean, or the Greek island of Santorini, or off the Celtic Ridge of Britain or even further afield in the South China Sea. Since wild guesses are being put forward, I would guess that Atlantis was located just outside New Orleans.
