The Ultimate Sidebar Management Thread

[history]
Did you know that any Free Republic topic can be a sidebar for you? Did you know you can remove any sidebar that you currently have? Did you know you can control how many posts show up in each sidebar, and what order the sidebars show up on your latest posts page?
I have compiled this thread to help make the task of managing your sidebars easier.
The following table shows all the Free Republic topics that are currently configured. For any of them, you can click to topic name to see what the actual topic is, in case the one-word name doesn't make that obvious. For each topic I have included a link that will either add the topic as a sidebar or remove it as a sidebar for your account.
Once you have the sidebars you want chosen, then you can set how many posts for each and what order the sidebars are displayed. The My Subscriptions link brings up a page where you can change these options. For any sidebar, the value you put in the MAX column is the maximum number of articles which will show up in the sidebar. The ORDER column is used to designate the order you want them to appear. The sidebar that has the lowest number will be displayed first-- so the easiest way to set this up is to just go and put a 1 in the ORDER field for the sidebar you want to go on top, then a 2 in the one you want second, and so on. If you give the same ORDER number for two or more sidebars, then whichever one has been most recently posted to will come first.
A little known about feature is the Review page, which can be quite handy after you have set up all your sidebars. Try it out after you have done all the rest.

Those are set up as something different than topics (I forget the exact term).
John eventually is going to migrate them over to topics but he has not done so yet. When he does then they would be handled just like these. Thanks, AM

It is way past time for an official FR FAQ file to be developed and a link to it posted in the upper LH corner along with "Topics", "Search", etc.
This post would be a very good piece to include in it. There have been other posts in recent weeks with regards to vanities, etc. Let's get going on it!
To: Stefan Stackhouse
Are you volunteering to compile it? ;-)
To: Admin Moderator
I can't do it all, but I would be glad to be part of the team and compose some of the answers to some of the questions. What I suggest is that you discuss it among the FR leadership, appoint someone "in charge" of the project, and ask for volunteers for a team. I'll be glad to be ONE of the volunteers. A groop effort involving about a dozen or so should suffice to get the job done.
To: Stefan Stackhouse
I think that is a great idea. Let's see if we get more volunteers and if we do I will work on the logistics of setting up a working place and such.

The Smoky BackroomFor some reason, the "official" FR spelling is "Smokey."
Its not vey series, nor is it realy hugh. The point maybe truely mute. Some times, than, alot of us are fast and lose with our speling here. Its alright anyways. Atleast thats the subject of a whole nuther thread. Your not loosing perspective, are you.

John eventually is going to migrate them over to topics but he has not done so yet. When he does then they would be handled just like these. That is an enhancement for which I've been patiently waiting for what seems like forever. I don't want to harp and nag JohnRob about it, because I understand that there are much higher priorities involved in the maintenance and development of forum software/hardware. But in the interim, could we PLEASE have a little refinement of the "topics" that are available for selection?
In particular, I'm thinking of the foreign nations that are currently on the list. These presently consist of canada, germany, israel, japan, mexico, russia and uk. While we certainly don't need every nation on the face of the planet listed, there are certainly newsworthy nations that are conspicuous by their absence: China, Puerto Rico, France, Colombia, Venezuela, Cuba, Korea, Iraq, Iran, Saudi Arabia, India, Pakistan, etc. If nothing else, I'd appreciate it if at least these nations for which there are a significant number of articles posted be included in the topics. Thank-you.

I wish if I subscribed to Breaking News and Front Page (or any other topic) that Breaking would still be on top (unless it's changed recently).
To: I Am Not A Mod; John Robinson; Admin Moderator
Any possibility that Breaking news can be broken up into Breaking, Activism, and Radio/TV announcements?
Thanks

You didn't read this full post, did you? :-)
Below the table up above, I put directions on how to accomplish exactly what you just asked.

I know you all have higher priorities these days, but the "tech" forum is still only working sporadically at best as a sidedar. Nothing shows up immediately when moved to "tech", some show up after a mysterious and unpredictable delay, and some never show up (especially the ones I change!)
I will keep on testing this feature (on relevant articles only, of course!) and let you know when it is working.
