While policy certainty is always difficult to ascertain, because liberals focus on the liberal faith of the candidate rather than the policies he holds, it is it is possible to tease out some basic requirements for a person to receive liberal blessing and support. On cannot be realistically considered a member of the liberal intelligentsia or a candidate suitable for approval by the liberal intelligentsia without meeting at least 3 out of 4 of the following personal beliefs.
First, they must believe and advocate that the Viet Nam War was unjust, bad and wrong. They must do this in spite of the fact that Nixon pulled the remaining combat troops out in March of 1973. It was not till later, after Senator Church and others passed a bill preventing the President from using any air power without their permission, and, further, later even cutting the funds to the South Vietnamese.
Second, they must believe the war in Iraq is unjust, bad and wrong. Further, they must exhibit firm resolve in seeing this war ends in defeat.
Third, They must be unalterably opposed to President Bush and show their contempt in subtle and not so subtle ways.
Fourth, others must think of them as liberals or at least traditional protestants such that their religious convictions are tepid and do not influence in any way their political positions and actions.
IMHO, Senator Hagel meets all four of these basic, required criteria to be considered by the WaPo and the other MSM as being a suitable, Republican candidate for President.
Senators Dont Win.
We want leaders, not negotiators.
he will make it past primaries and he will win Presidency in 2008. He is an intelligent man with good will and I will support him no matter what. And I ask fellow Nebraskans to do the same. Not only put a moderate Republican in the White House, but also a good Nebraskan. Nebraska: The good life
Hagel: The man from Nebraska for all the people
OK. You joined up today just for that endorsement og Hagel?
I like Hagel, unlike alot of other people here, but he will not survive the primaries.
Keep in mind, the people on this board, are a pretty good indicator of the party and the people who vote in the primaries in general. If they hate him here, there's a pretty good chance alot of other conservatives aren't going like him either.
Unlike the DUmpster board, you can actually get an accuarate reading of how somone will do in the primaries on this board. Here's a safe bet, no moderate, and certainly no democrat will get to the white house in '08. The GOP will not nominate (forget nomination, they'll villanize) any moderate that dares run in the primary.
Sadly, Hagel isn't a regular moderate, he'd an pure pro-life supporter and generally pro-business.
Hagel's ACU ratings are misleading because they don't factor in his apparent support for racial quotas, his hostility to Israel, and his conciliatory remarks about John Kerry. Goodness knows where he really stands on anything. Maybe the ACU can enlighten us, since they are so conservative that they supported Arlen Specter for re-election.
