I've posted on this before. No Senator, especially a RINO like Hagel, will win the Presidency. Governors win, Senators (usually) don't. A Senator can sometimes make a decent running mate, but not Hagel. There's a good crop of conservative (or at least as much so as GWB) for 2008, such as:
Mitt Romney, MA governor. He's a Mormon, and really more of a Utah guy than a Masshole. He'd probably win MA, possibly NH, CT, and would still appeal in the South and Midwest due to his Western roots. I have a small fear of an anti-Morman bias, however, and I am unsure of his abortion stance, but I think he's at worse a RILOM.
Bill Owens, CO governor. He's charismatic, intelligent, good-looking, and well spoken. Club for Growth has already endorsed him to run for Prez in 2008. However, he recently got divorced, and both houses of the CO legislature have turned over to Democrats during his governancy.
Tim Pawlenty, MN governor. If Minnesota can elect a Republican governor, and he runs for President, he can win that state. He will have Midwestern appeal, and with a Southern running mate might be even stronger.
Mark Sanford, SC governor. Solid conservative, popular in SC. Could be a rising star.
Marc Racicot, former Gov of Montana. Has worked with Bush this year in his campaign. Was questionable on pro-life status but this has been debunked-he is pro-life or at worst a RILOM. Has the experience and would almost certainly get GWB's endorsement.
Mike Huckabee, AR governor. Another promising Southern governor. Can redeem Arkansas for giving us Bill Clinton, LOL!
Another one I like is MD Lt. Governor Michael Steele. He probably doesn't have enough experience to win on a national ticket, but might make a good running mate. He's a Black conservative, very charismatic, devout Catholic and a great, motivating speaker. Blew me away at the RNC.
In the Senate, Bill Frist and Rick Santorum have some potential, but as I mentioned above, both are Senators. However, either one might make a good running mate. Santorum in particular might help win PA for the GOP making a Democratic victory near-impossible as long as we still held Florida and Ohio.
If Hagel got the nomination, we'd be guaranteed a Democratic President come January 2009.
I'd vote for Condoleeza Rice with Alan Keyes as veep. If you're not a social conservative, you don't get my vote.
I have my issues with W as well, but there's no comparison between Bush and Hagel.
I thought Condi was pro-choice. I don't think she's a social conservative, but I'd love to be proven wrong on that because I think she's of woman who carries herself with class and dignity. Do you know if she's pro-choice or pro-life?
I bet he'll get McCain's endorsement.
I'm with you! It would be so cool for the first woman, first black woman president to be a Republican!
I read an article about her last year and she is a very serious committed Christian. I don't think she is pro-death, but the article didn't mention that specifically. Other things in the article gave me the impression she was pro-life.
This southern white boy has no problem with colored folks, as long as they have their heads screwed on correctly.
I think Hagel's voting record actually is not bad but he sounds like a "moderate" who tries to distance himself from GWB too often. He is a rather boring speaker too. I suspect he will not get far.
McHaGar!!!
Moved and seconded! (... which'll probably end up making you change your vote, I know... but, still...) :)
I'd rather have Sammy Hagar!
Where's the BARF ALERT on this headline????
Good morning.
Bob Dole was a middle of the road guy who fit right in with the minority party.
Hagel would make Dole look conservative. He does not believe in the 2nd Amendment and he looks on conservatives as reactionaries.
Hagel is a big 'R' Republican but not even close to being a small 'r' Republican.
How about we shake up the world and run Colin Powell and Condoleeza Rice as our ticket in 2008.

Powell is the very definition of a RINO. Both of them think its OK to murder unborn children in the womb.
I'd stay home.
Honest answer: not being a Nebraskan, myself... I didn't feel it was my place to declare hagel's candidacy barf-y or non, quite frankly. I'm not as knowledgable, re: where he stands on the various issues as I am some other Congresscritters.
My fellow FReepers from Nebraska have all spoken eloquently, intelligently and forcefully on the matter, throughout this thread. I'd say their combined best efforts equal a "Barf Alert," at barest minimum. :)
Good morning.
It's true that Powell is the RINO's RINO but imagine the fun we could have watching the left twist itself in knots trying to deal with a ticket made up of a black ex-military man and a conservative black woman.
I guess I am just warped enough to think that would be entertaining.

Chuck Hagel is ALWAYS ready to talk -- when he's done preening himself in the mirror.
