Kerry gives unused funds for recount in Washington state

OLYMPIA, Wash. -- John Kerry has wired $250,000 in unspent campaign funds to help Democrats pay for a second recount in the election for Washington state governor, party officials say.

The donation Wednesday about doubled the available funds but the party still has no more than half the $1 million or more required to pay for a hand recount of all 2.9 million ballots, chairman Paul Berendt said.

"John Kerry really came to our rescue," Berendt said, "but our ability to pay for a statewide recount is still subject to money which is not in...

"We are working to move heaven and earth to get all of the money we need."

Practically all of the $500,000 on hand has been raised in the past week, about 500 donors have contributed over the Internet in the past day and the Democratic National Committee and Democratic Governors Association also are being solicited, Berendt said.

Kerry easily carried the state Nov. 2, but a machine recount of voting for governor showed Republican Dino Rossi winning by 42 votes over Christine O. Gregoire - the narrowest margin in a gubernatorial election in U.S. history.

Democrats have until 5 p.m. PST Friday to post the $700,000 or more required to begin a second statewide recount which would be conducted by hand. A second option is to pay less for a recount only in specified counties or precincts.

Rossi, a former state Senate budget chairman, has asked Gregoire, a three-term state attorney general, to let the results stand in the interest of an orderly transfer of power.

Gregoire has refused, emphasizing the importance of assuring that every vote is counted.

Rossi spokeswoman Mary Lane dismissed Kerry's contribution by saying, "That's their decision."

Which is just what they'll do. Stick it to the taxpayers.

Gee, he can't buy Ohio to win the White House for himself, so he's going to use the extra money to buy an election for some other deserving Democrat. How charming.

As Baynative noted on the WA Board: "I was told today that all they have to do is stall the certification process enough, or create a tie so that the date for installing a new Governor (jan 12) can't be met and then the election has to be decided in the Washington legislature which is democrat controlled."

In billionaire circles this is known as "rounding off money," or chump change.

Last I knew, Je$$e Jack$son was still trying to get the Ohio State Supreme Court to throw out the results. He has until Monday, when the results are officially certified by the state.

Why pay extra when he can pass an envelope to Je$$e and let him do the work for him?

I believe that the USSC would overrule any partial recount, a la Bush v. Gore. I also believe that expert written opinion exists showing that each new recount actually lessens the probability of a valid count.
