Laser targets Airlines in Nashville
Fox17News -Nashville (article not posted yet) ^ | Self | Self

Posted on 01/02/2005 7:16:29 PM PST by Blood of Tyrants

Just reported: An airline on approach to the Nashville airport has had it's cockpit targeted by a green laser. The plane was about 6 miles out and at 3000 feet when the incident occurred. The plane landed safely and no one was injured.

This makes SEVERAL reports of green lasers being targeted at commercial airlines in the past several days. Something really weird is going on and it is a concerted effort by several individual groups acting in concert or one very mobile unit.

An FBI agent said it remained for several seconds, like the plane was being tracked.

I would classify this as rather subjective.

What were the exact words from the pilots?

Perhaps I should perform an experiment on Monday morning. Since I work at an airport, and personally own a laser pointer.

Since we will be testing out a new camera in a customer's aircraft, perhaps I should have my co-workers time how long I can keep a laser directed at their plane.

I have a feeling it will be rather trivial to keep it aimed at them for a minimum of 30 seconds.

Here's one thread with a quote or two from the deputy chairman of the security committee for the Allied Pilots Association.

We'll look forward to your report on your experiment. :-)

When we fly, I will conduct this experiment!

The runway is iced this morning, so I am not sure if we can fly. We will be busy clearing the runway this morning.

However, when we fly (today or tomorrow) we will conduct this experiment.

I am now trying to figure out how to rig a video camera in the aircraft cockpit.

Perhaps this experiment should be well documented and supplied to the FBI and NTSB.

I will post the results when they are available.

P.S. I am a pilot!

Just for grins, would you accept a Black & Decker laser level as a laser source?

Not a green laser, but would be even more difficult for the pilot to see during daylight.

The problem is how do you know the laser is hitting the plane. Seeing a tiny green dot on a plane two miles away is not going to be easy.

And unlike a red laser, the green beam itself can be seen in mid-air in dark conditions, not just the laser beam dot. This allows the green laser pointer to be used for pointing to star constellations (skypointing) and also just generally look cool as hell. The green laser beam dot can be seen at much greater distances than with a red laser pointer.

Range of approximately 9,000 ft (2600 m) in darkness

This is why you're hearing the reports of a "Green" laser.

That's not a laser pointer from Office Depot.

Excellent, empiricism! Please ping me if you go through with the experiment.

Hardly. 6 miles out and 3000 feet is not the kind of laser you could pick up just anywhere.

A target 6 miles out, 3000 feet up, and moving at 600 mph. You'd have to have a very steady hand to hit that target.

Yikes! I just arrived at the airport and it has 1 inch of ice on the runway. Absolutly no flying today!

For the next 8 hours, we will be out on the runway with the snow plows and attempt to scrape this ice off.

WHEN aircraft can use this airport, we will conduct this experiment.

The plane here in Cleveland reported the laser 'tracked' them on landing. They were btw 8500-10000 ft. going 300 mph. On the other thread http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1310958/posts
someone discussed how this could be done. The other point is some of these are pulsating green lights which tend to put them in the military relm. China has made available a laser on the open market called a ZM-87, it's readily available in the third world.

I agree, with more reports finding their way to MSM, we may see some copycat stuff. But if one googles for information you'll read about reports from September of 2004 in which pilots received eye damage from this. This has been going on for a while.
