Should We Let Slide the Goggle-Eyed Bride? - (too funny!)
TOWNHALL.COM ^ | MAY 8, 2005 | DOUG GILES

Never has our nation been more united than in our current consensus that Jennifer Wilbanks is officially coo-coo for Cocoa Puffs. I’m talkin’ coo-coo for Cocoa Puffs. Y’know, we can’t seem to harmonize over Iraq, judicial nominees, or what to do with social security, but we have formally joined in one accord and have spewed our national coffee over the goggle-eyed runaway bride, aka, Jenny from Georgia. It seems as if this Georgia peach has officially begun to turn.

For what it’s worth, here’s what I propose we require of this damsel who’s hanging on by a thin wire: 1. I think we should not accept the apology she gave last Thursday until we get to see her self-inflicted hair-do. 2. I think she should also apologize to Hispanic men everywhere for accusing one of them of her feigned abduction. As a Caucasian male, I think I can speak for my Latino hermanos by saying … as if! Pamela Anderson, maybe. Jennifer Wilbanks … yeah … right. 3. I think her apology was a little thin on Thursday and didn’t do justice to the distraction she caused Gwinnett law enforcers from pursuing real missing persons and criminals versus looking for this spoiled ham. 4. In addition, I think for the next ten years Jenny should be forced to slog through Georgian bogs to look for any lost persons, pets, or coins without being afforded waders, a compass, a GPS, sunscreen, or Deep Woods Off. 5. Lastly, I’m sensing Jenny needs a good ole-fashion exorcism. And I think we deserve, if we desire, to watch it. Her Pastor stated that she needs some “spiritual counseling” and is going through a “rough time.” Ya think? It’s beyond that, my brother.

Jennifer … what’s up, girl? What were you thinking?

I found him rather charming and open

That makes two of you.

Oops. Make that one, the other one scrammed.

Your comments about personal responsibility and the need to make amends to family and friends for days of anxiety and worry are well stated and well received here. However, there is no such thing as, "official society," and your effort to slip it into the deck here as a real card is this game, is deceptive and false. Following your train of thought, one would have to conclude that no American may leave his/her locale without first informing relatives and/or local police. Such a position is anathema to me, and, I suspect, to most Americans, as well.

You are being legalistic. The meaning of those words would be the officials that we have as a society delegated to enforce our laws, and serve the public safety, such as police. Please do not attempt to use your disagreement with my use of the phrase as an excuse to invalidate my premises; such an attempt actually is what is deceptive and false. Those officials [police] are EXPECTED to respond to such an event, and suffer adverse penalties if they do nit. To pretend otherwise, based on some philosophical view of life in which we are free to move about as we wish [ or whatever], is immature and unreal. A missing bride to be in these circumstances will ALWAYS precipitate a search in real life. And EVERYONE, including you, know it.

To question John's faithfulness to Jennifer or to God is laughable. He is the finest man I'm privileged to know. Even when everyone seemed to be accusing him of murder, he knew God's glory would evenutally shine in this.

I think that's what bothered me most about this case, that so many people were so anxious to pin the "crime" on the fiance, without any evidence whatsoever.

And the Atlanta Journal is reporting that she has (appropriately so) voluntarily checked into an inpatient treatment center for physical and mental treatment. This is long overdue. I am surprised that the family didn't initiate some type of intervention before. It would have saved lots of people a lot of heartache. But maybe her family, being prominent, didn't want to face that Jennifer was not their good little girl after all.

While I know nothing about their faith etc or their devotion to each other I do know this lady has very serious mental problems and that is demonstrated by her being arrested 5 times!!! That is a scream for attention and help! To me is sounds like everyone from family to well meaning friends such as yourself have enabled this woman and she has not even offered her apology on her own she has someone else do that for her. Thank God she did not get married because I would have feared what kind of mother she would have been with so many emotional problems. Had she have been given real consequences early on (say after the 1st or 2nd conviction) maybe she would have gotten the help she had so desparately needs. What she did was extremely selfish and very immature. There were volunteers who took vacation time and personal time from work to look for this woman. She is not being honest when she said she didn't know what kind of havoc she caused! What with the Laci Peterson case and the recent abductions and murders in Florida she knew what would go on. Allow this woman to accept responsibility for her selfish actions and maybe she stands a chance but for heavens sake STOP enabling her or she will continue to spiril out of control.

You statement that my position, "based on some philosophical view of life in which we are free to move about as we wish... is immature and unreal," is completely mind-boggling here. My position is based on the Constitution of the United States and on the laws flowing from it, as currently written. If you are serious about your position on holding folks accountable, let me ask you this: Do you think families of those murdered by the DC Sniper would be correct and right to file suit against FBI profilers for getting everything completely wrong? Or against Chief Moose for alerting the public to the white van, while the killers were actually shooting people from the trunk of a dark sedan? I think those suits stand on firmer ground than any effort of yours to make a disturbed and confused girl pay for costs largely motivated by premature and excessive media coverage. But, then, that's just me. :)
