Mad cow hype you say? I'm not so sure. There's only so much nature can take.

I hear the symptoms are a shrill voice and the tendency to get elected to the Senate from NY.

"What are the Tri-Cities Herald and the Columbia Basin Herald saying about this?"

I don't know as we do not take the newspaper.

Question: Are there any known cases of bison getting mad cow or is the bison population safe?

Driving a car is much more dangerous than eating raw beef.

Yummmy....http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/3969530/
Dad is 94 and sharp as a tack. We always did home butchering and processing. Nothing went to waste (now goes to waist...) Brains were a delicacy, lightly battered and fried, sometimes scrambled with eggs.

This is an interesting disease. Almost science fiction. "Attack of the deviant protein strand." Certainly a sad situation for any victim. But likelihood of getting the disease from eating beef is so remote that the biggest cost is political and economic.

When New Guinea cannibals stopped eating the brains of their defeated enemies Kuru pretty much became extinct....perhaps a benefit from sacrifice of Christian Missionaries....anyway, beef and sheep bi-products havn't been in cattle feed for years. Unfortunately, this will stay in the headlines, but statistically, chances of catching this disease are nil.

But what if some cattle growers wish to have the beef tested at their own expense in order to export to Japan? Should the federal government deny them that option?

That is exactly what happened to a small beef exporter in Texas last year that was testing every cow at a private lab and certifying it as Mad Cow disease free, before exporting it to Japan.

The Feds found out about it and made them stop, on the basis that it implied that there was a problem with US beef supply.

Sounds to me like there was fear that someone might find out that the problem was more widespread than the government wants the American public to know.

Hmmm...

One caveat....my apprehensions would increase a bunch if I were a scientist working with this little burger.

From what I understand, Mad Cow cannot be tested for in a live animal. So no matter how much testing this guy did he cannot claim his cows are "Mad" free. Perhaps if science comes up with a definitive test we could eradicate the disease and not have to worry about it. I have also heard Japan banned our beef after the first Mad Cow incident last year. It is a mutual ban on import export. One does not go around screwing with trade laws. It can be very hazardous and can even include jail time.

It doesn't make any sense to go against the governments regulations. They can shut you down and put you out of business in a heart tick. Should they be involved to this extent? Hell no! But they are and I myself would not be willing to take the chance on losing any of our operation. This guy obviously was trying a gat rich quick scheme as the price of beef in Japan is astronomical!

sometimes, rarely, at the market I will see prices a little lower. Not often. And the meat does not sell as well because of the price, so "you" can get it on discount and frozen when it is near its expiration date at grocery store.

But I have not seen better prices for organic, grass fed meats otherwise.

I saw that story on MSNBC (questionable source granted) on Deborah Norville's show at 9 PM. It was cut short around 9:35 PM or so by the "Breaking News" that Michael Jackson had been indicted for pervertism.

I was furious. I was in stuck in a hotel that was having internet problems and was pi$$3d since they interrupted the show, and on all the cable channels there was nothing but all Michael Jackson all of the time for the rest of the night.

But from what I understood, this small Texas meat packer, tested each beef critter after slaughter, and didn't release the associated meat until it proved clean from Mad Cow disease.

I'm not a fan of global trade organizations such as the WTO, and wonder why if someone anywhere wants to buy my product, why can't I sell it to them?

If this is indeed how he tested his beef before it was shipped overseas, then the feds cannot nail him with anything more than bucking the trade embargo.

Still this is a pretty serious offense. While I disagree with Uncle Sam's policies when it comes to beef, they are still in line with other products covered under the same restrictions. Nothing is as easy as it seems when it comes to exporting a human consumption item. The hoops you have to leap through in order to even be eligible are amazing. The guy who tried this has more money than brains. From what I understand, it is just not worth it! Might be a helluva hobby though if you can afford it!

You better have a heck of a lot more money in your bank account than I and my partners, or you will be out of business before your first child has entered kindly garden.

My children are in their 30's...........LOL
