CNN Report Lauds NO Police While Ignoring National Guard
CNN

Posted on 09/04/2005 12:46:06 PM PDT by Williams

Just watched a CNN report that credited 5 NO police with helping to protect a landing strip for three days so evacuees could get out. Extended report NEVER mentioned the National Guard troops who could be seen in the background and who were conducting the evacuation. It was never mentioned that the helicopters, including the one that brought the police in and took them out at the end, were all a National Guard effort.

The 5 police all seemed like excellent, dedicated cops. No problem with that. But this massive evacuation was taking place for three days, and there is no way these few cops were the only protection. But the story was exclusively about the officers. The reporter made an extremely odd comment that these cops could have quit and gone home days ago. The media seems very adept at excusing all the NO cops who just quit at a time when quitting was the most dishonorable thing to do.

One of the police officers made an interesting comment, he said their biggest problem was keeping the men back who tried to rush the helicopters ahead of the women and children. He said "there are a lot of coward men out there."

CNN plainly is trying to perpetuate the myth that only the NO police are the heroes, and they are hiding the massive federal effort as much as possible. It was obvious that in covering 5 cops who protected an unidentified "landing strip" they avoided showing the ID on the helicopters, they never used the words "National Guard" and they didn't interview a single Guardsman - even to ask them about the cops being featured in the story.

You know the rote: We could totally understand their breakdown after witnessing the looting and shooting, loss of their homes and maybe members of their families... who would return in those conditions... only these hero cops who remained (and did their job). Sarcasm off

A desperate attempt to provide cover for a for a black democrat run police force in a black-democrat run city. Their performance is graded on a forgiving curve..to say the least...

Agree. That dippy black guy is TERRIBLE. Somebody tell him the cavalry arrived and he missed the story. And what
good does it do to rehash the filthy Convention Center and
Super Dome stories?

Your remarks sound a lot like what Rush said about McNabb. The resulting kerfuffle inspired McNabb to improve his perfomance, maybe the same will happen in New Orleans.

You're right and since the media loves to blame, we should blame the hurricane on the news media:

they under covered it at first;
then they hyped it;
they were over concerned with category;
their idiot reporters stood in the wind getting blown around when they could have put on an adult from the National Weather Service to give some real news.

Yes, it's the media's fault.

To lump Fox News with CNN and PMSNBC is wrong!

Earlier this morniing a CNN reporter fessed up that many of the NOPD had just said screw it. It only came out of his mouth though when the commentator asked him to further explain why in the world 2/3rds of the NOPD were not on the job.

Surely that little jewel of a segment will be replayed over and over on CNN. /sarc

This is not surprising; the Dims who've run Louisiana and N.O. for decades are getting a pass, while President Bush is being blamed for the debacle.

I'm guessing the CNN report failed to mention that roughly 1/4 to 1/3 of the NOPD have been AWOL since the passing of the storm, despite department orders that all officers be on duty during and after the hurricane. Or, that some of New Orleans's finest were photographed looting downtown stores in the aftermath of the storm. To be sure, many police officers remained on the job and performed heroically. But the fact remains: the NOPD essentially collapsed after the hurricane, and never mounted a viable effort to restore order and security.

The degree of order now restored in N.O. is a testament to the National Guard and active duty military M.P. units now in the city. BTW, the city's police chief and mayor should simply shut up and let the professionals handle things. The "mayor" of the Big Easy is now an Army 3-star general at Camp Shelby, MS (running JTF Katrina) and the police chief is the senior provost marshal officer inside the city limits. They're getting the job done--something Nagin, Blanco and their cronies wouldn't even attempt.

Agreed. Sissyboy Shep was almost in tears asking why people weren't allowed to walk over a bridge to a part of the city that was not flooded and had lights. Perhaps, Shep, they didn't want that neighborhood inundated with 20,000 looters who just picked your part of the city clean.

This is the left and msm's best chance to hurt the president, truth be damned.

This was a massive failure of a corrupt city and incompetent state leadership. Where else did over half of the cops quit? Where else did a city turn into a 3rd world hellhole within 2 days?

What else is new? In brainy Liberal Land anyone is preferable to members of the United States military. Even cops who loot exclusive donut shops in the midst of tumult and horror.

Just saw a video on CNN. The Mayor was detailing his agenda. One of his top priorities seem to be getting his police and fire department our of New Orleans. He actually said he was looking at finding them hotel rooms in Las Vegas. I would not have believed it, if I hadn't just seen it.

" Unrelated comment, but one of the responders (could have been someone from the NOPD) said the men were their biggest problem.

They wouldn't let the officers evacuate the women and children, but ran to the helicopters ahead of everyone. The cops had to pull them off"

Carol Mosely Braun told CNN yesterday in a phone interview, that it was disgraceful that the huge crowds at the Superdome and Convention Center
" were prevented from helping each other."
( I'm not making this up )

Guess when the media showed us pictures of able bodied men sitting around complaining instead of doing something positive- like trying to organize and marshall whatever resources they had- let's put the women and children over here in the shade, who has extra water ? who has extra formula ? are there any health care professionals among us ?
retired LE ? retired military ?

the cameras should have panned out to show the NG holding them back at the point of a bayonet.

Who was responsible for evacuating the poor & elderly? Who left hundreds of busses in low lying areas? Who said Bush was sending the CIA to kill him? NO Mayor.

I'm pretty sure this was on the CBC Evening news on Thursday evening. I KNOW, but I was waiting for my local news to come on as I was preparing dinner, and I don't get FOX in the kitchen. ;)

Some Blonde Chippy reporter was harrassing this Army General that was twice her size, running to catch him time and again, jamming a microphone in his face and whining over and over and over, "Where have you been? It's been FIVE Days! Where have you been? It's been FIVE days!"

The LOOK he gave her was a sight to behold. You KNEW he wanted to squish her like a bug under his boot (and he could have!) but all he kept repeating was, "We're here NOW!" And he kept on walking with this awesome, swaggering, military bearing, LOL!

It was perfect. I loved it. I'll cherish it always. :)
