I wonder if the Israelis have a legal mechanism to remove a PM before holding new elections?

Olmert's not a Republican and in fact not even an American. Take this where it belongs: Israel wimped out, Olmert is a notorious lefty whose entire family is active in left-wing "peace" causes in Israel, and he obviously had no heart to go through with it. Bush can only do so many things, and running a foreign country (Israel) is not one of them.

That said, I don't think Syria plans to do anything. The Middle Eastern nuts have found that they can bluster and howl without ever being held accountable. Furthermore, it's almost as good as really attacking, thanks to our press. All they have to do is say some irrational thing and it is magnified so that the world trembles. It's a lot cheaper than war, too.

I think they will be as successful as they were the last time they tried this. That's when Israel GOT the Golan Heights!

They are not this stupid, Israel will destroy them in a conventional war.

They may have been lulled into a stupid state by the news lately making Israel out to be defeated by the Hezzies. If they want to believe that, then they deserved to be kicked to the curb.

I'm still waiting for Haaretz's follow-up on this. Perhaps they got a leaked copy of the speech? Haaretz has been fairly reliable in this latest war which is why I think they must have a good source. To put words in a foreign leader's mouth like that does not seem like something they'd do.

I know Israel has F-16's, do they have A10's? Those 30 tankds would not last too long.

Yes, the party can get rid of him. In parliamentary systems the Prime Minister is selected by their party (Israel's a tad weird because they use a "list" system.) If Kadima decided to elect a new leader internally they could get rid of him without having a general election.

Syria has removed the mines on the Israel/Syria border and that they've stationed 30 tanks there

Mere target practice for a Warthog squadron..

God's still in control. Syria can't come against Israel without being destroyed herself.

Well maybe that's the day the Iranians jump in. Syria could get a head start.

Yep. Any pretext will do. The Islamofascists have got their mojo working now. They are prepping for the main act.

...Syria has removed the mines on the Israel/Syria border

Sounds like an invitation for Israel to go all the way to Damascus.

Kill Nasrallah and another one will step in to take his place. Good for PR but to hurt these guys you have to take out the command structure (head) and starve the body as in a blockade.

Plus, you have to kill a whole lot of the rank and file.

I think they will be as successful as they were the last time they tried this. That's when Israel GOT the Golan Heights!

Syrian armor came within a breath of breaking through the Israeli defenses in the Golan back in 1973, but was repulsed in a heroic effort by outnumbered IDF tanks. The battle was the stuff of legend, and is studied in leadership courses all over the world (except in Muslim armies, I'd imagine).

That said, Syria's surprise attack was launched from the high ground now occupied by the IDF. The Golan Heights is among the world's most strategic military locations. Beneath it, across the plains to the east, Damascus itself lies bare -- which is why Israel has refused to return this captured land to Assad or his boy. I doubt Syria could take it back from the IDF at any cost.
