Israel has lost the bigger battle. Unfortunately this will get worse before it will get better. Why wouldn't Syria take it back? Now is the time.

The world won't allow Israel to do anything.

Joshua 1:2-4

2Moses my servant is dead; now therefore arise, go over this Jordan, thou, and all this people, unto the land which I do give to them, even to the children of Israel. 3Every place that the sole of your foot shall tread upon, that have I given unto you, as I said unto Moses. 4From the wilderness and this Lebanon even unto the great river, the river Euphrates, all the land of the Hittites, and unto the great sea toward the going down of the sun, shall be your coast.

Yes great grand children, I remember that fateful day August 23, 2006 when Syria became the Great Glass Desert.

I blamed PC Clinton when he was in office. Now that others are in office, I have to blame them.

I call BS. This is smack talk and nothing else.

Syria has had an awful long time to respond, they were threatening to respond if Israel attacked Lebanon at the beginning. They were very very quiet during the fighting.

Now that its over they are back talking tough. They only talk tough when its safe to do so.

And thats all the people need to know.

I will liberate the Golan before Syria does.

The Golan was already liberated, in 1967, by the Israelis.

I know Israel has F-16's, do they have A10's?

No, AFAIK, no other nation operates the A-10, although it was offered to several. Not sexy enough.

She's an ugly bird, and slow, but functionally quite beautiful, especially to the grunts on the ground.

However they have other anti-tank weapons, like Hellfire missiles hanging on Apache helicopters, that are probably better than that Big Gatling (GAU-8) *against tanks*.

The Golan Heights is among the most commanding strategic positions in the world. It is fortified in depth as a 3-D battlespace, and any army that sought to take it would have to make a long approach in plain sight of IDF defenders. Deep air interdiction by the Israeli Air Force would decimate the Syrian columns before they even drew close enough to fire their weapons, and they would be finished off by IAF close air support and IDF artillery and tank fire. I cannot imagine any force in the world that would want to attack the Golan Heights from the east -- into the full fury of an IDF/IAF fighting for its survival. On the other hand, a timid appeaser like Ehud Olmert might just give it to the Syrians in exchange for promises...

I didn't know about that. [the 1973 battle for the Golan Heights]. Do you know of any good reading that would have details on that battle?

There are several excellent books detailing the history of the 1973 Yom Kippur War, in which Egypt and Syria simultaneously launched a surprise invasion that almost overwhelmed Israel. For a specific study of the desperate battle in the Golan Heights, look for Duel for the Golan: The 100-Hour Battle That Saved Israel by Jerry Asher and Eric Hammel. (I got to know Eric Hammel after Beirut; he is a prolific and first-rate military historian.) And the web contains numerous leadership studies and accounts from that battle, which is studied throughout the world. Heroic small unit leadership carried the day for the IDF -- and saved the State of Israel from annihilation.

Considering the events that led to Israel taking it over, yes, I think it's fair to say that they won it fair and square. I realize that there is some debate in the international community as to who "owns it", but I think of it as part of Israel now. (And I'm certainly not alone in that view.)

"Makes sense... Israel has managed to show what the terrorists see as weakness. They've invited and invation from Syria, and increased terrorist attacks on all fronts.

I am a Syrian, and I can assure you all that Syria is not going to war.
We all have to bear in mind that Israel is still occupying Syrian territory (Golan heights), this occupation is ILLEGAL by the international law, and Israel is still defiant to implement UN resolutions 242 and 338 in that regards.
Israelis are not willing to talk peace with Syrians, and the US administration is not willing to push peace talks further, the equations is very simple for Syrians, give us back our land, and you get a full-fledged peace (and by the way that was the basis on which Syrians has agreed to participate in the Madrid peace summit, everything was going absolutely perfect, till the former Israeli prime minister Isaac Rabin was assassinated by a radical compatriot) …..

Sorry, the UN is irrelevant. Your country has brutally attacked Israel more than once. Israel defended itself and won some land that it needed to create a strategic zone so as to decrease the chances of being invaded again. To the victors go the spoils as they say. (Especially when they were on the defensive to start.)

As for peace, you may believe that's what will happen, but that's not at all what your current government is saying. Your government, as well as the government of Iran, would like nothing more than to see Israel wiped off the map.

There will be no peace until people stop attacking Israel. Peace is NOT found by supporting groups like Hezbollah.

I should add that the reason I and others view the UN as irrelevant is because the UN often sides with the terrorists and their supporters and is very anti-Israel.

I was waiting for someone to bring this up. Despite what the anti-Israeli UN says, the Golan Heights have rightfully belonged to Israel since 1973. Syria forfeited that land when it invaded Israel -- and LOST. When you start a war, get your ass kicked and lose territory as a result, that land is no longer yours. You should be thankful that the Israelis chose not to destroy Damascus when it lay undefended before the IDF counterattack. There is nothing for Israel to talk to you about.

The U.N. is lost in space. I can't imagine why we play along with them, but we have shown we are even willing to sign on to peace agreements that hobble Israel and give cart blanch to Hezbollah.

You're right. Syria no longer has any claim to the Golan Heights IMO. They attacked. They lost. The land was forfeit.

Although there is nothing for Israel to talk about, you can bet the U.N. and even the U.S. will talk about it, if pushed hard enough by Syria.

Israel is about to be sold out on the Golan Heights, if Syria pushes the issue and recent agreements are any indication.

Kill Nasrallah and another one will step in to take his place. Good for PR but to hurt these guys you have to take out the command structure (head) and starve the body as in a blockade. Plus, you have to kill a whole lot of the rank and file.

Right. Nasrallah is just a visible sign of the cancer that needs to be excised - and the source of that cancer is Iran.
