Bush cost the GOP the election because he took away the issue of immigration by being for open borders.

To the extent that the illegals issue made a difference, it was due to the president's dereliction of leadership and lack of strong advocacy for secure borders. He could have had the House bill, even something close enough to sign out of the pusillanimous Frist senate, and he could have won with it as an issue of homeland security as well as national sovereignty. But he chose to weasel on about family values and unwanted jobs and other such drivel.

Wasn't the whole story of this pathetic election, but--Total failure on this issue. Grade F.

Thanks Michael Savage. Thanks Pat Buchanan

No one knows or cares about Michael Savage, and Buchanan was right on this issue. So what else should he have done, support Bush's waffling?

Our current estimate of illegal aliens in Nebraska is about 30,000. The entire population of Nebraska is about 1 million. It used to be somewhat larger, but the taxes in this state are driving people away in droves.

I retired and moved to Ne. because my daughter is here, butI am still shocked by the taxes here. I'm thinking about moving out of here.

I sometimes go to a bigger town to shop and Wally-world and Home Depot are filled with illegals(you can just tell).

Taxes are high and these people here don't say squat. I'm just surprised.

Major work-site crackdowns have run into trouble in the past

What would anyone expect? These are stupid, ham-fisted police-state actions. Sound like they were planned by some 1950's southern redneck sheriff guarding the polls with dogs and firehoses against "them coloreds voting."

Somewhere in this great land there has to be a law enforcement person with enough brains not to shoot his country in the foot. The objective is to get rid of alien criminals, fer crissake, not shut down meatpacking plants and onion farms. Sheesh.

Are two people with tiny followings really the first two you should be blaming?

Dang, you're lucky. I think we EASILY have as as many illegals in Fresno County as you have in your whole STATE!

Did you hear the interviews with the Pres of LaRaza...no doubt in her mind that it will pass, she says because the Republicans are 'licking their wounds' over the loss. Guess she thinks that means a push for a bipartisan compromise in the spirit of 'cooperation' over this, or else she knows that deals were made over the fence approval. Either way, IMO Calderone's win and visit so soon after the loss was a clear indication that the bipartisan OBL agenda is being pushed forward quickly. Too much has already been invested in it at this point. And it's the OBL agenda for a North American Union that must be stopped. That's what this is really all about.

"I sometimes go to a bigger town to shop and Wally-world and Home Depot are filled with illegals(you can just tell)."

Don't let the OBLers run you out. Report these businesses repeatedly until something is done. Have you neighbors and friends call. And report them here and then call the business and let them know you have reported them:

And I should add, "you can just tell" isn't sufficient...confront the store manager and ASK is his employees are here legally and if they have used "Basic Pilot", to check their employees' status.

Making it a federal issue made it impossible to solve, made the GOP look bad, and distracted voters from the real issues.

Yea, that stupid Constitution thingy. Those vapidly stupid Founders that wrote it. WTH were they thinking? Blackbird.

You should go back and read my post; what I am referring to is the fact that people howl and scream about the all-powerful all-knowing "Government," but really, the laws that are attracting problem immigrants here - that is, ones who are coming looking for freebies or escaping from criminal charges in their own countries - are all local laws. Some cities give away benefits with no requirements for reasonable evidence of legal residence; many of them prevent law enforcement or others in the reasonable pursuit of their duties from asking for ID or reporting suspicious cases to immigration authorities. Deal with those things and you'd be moving in the right direction.

People who really wanted to deal with the illegals problem would have put pressure on their city and state governments to stop giving out welfare freebies to everybody, permit police and other authorities to check IDs and submit reports to immigration authorities, etc

You mean like Arizona who just passed 4 anti-illegal propositions? Still, guarding the border and immigration policy is a federal problem.

Here in Arizona, LEGAL Mexican immigrants are welcomed with open arms, but the masses of illegals have almost broken this state under the weight of their health care, their failure to learn english and to assimilate, the cost of educating their children, and the upsurge of violent crime. I am sick to death of people not understanding there is a difference between LEGAL and ILLEGAL immigration.

Worse yet, every time there's a referendum to cap state spending, the sheep vote it down! It's almost as though they demand to be punished. I guess the slave DOES learn to love the lash.

I think the reason so few people say anything about taxes in Nebraska is because they've lived here most or all their lives and have no other low-tax state with which to compare it.

There was a time when Nebraska was a "white state." We had no state income tax. Now look at us.

I would like to also apologize for all of the republicans who voted for Ben Nelson.

Yes. We should have voted for the unqualified, country-club rich boy, mudslinging Pete Ricketts instead. EIEIO.
