For the past few months, Sen. Chuck Hagel, Republican of Nebraska, has flirted with the idea of running for president as an antiwar Republican. Now, however, that platform is threatening Hagel’s standing within his own state and party.
In a race that has received scant national attention, Jon Bruning, Nebraska’s 38-year-old Republican attorney general, is challenging Hagel’s bid for re-election to the Senate--by attacking him from the right. Bruning charges that Hagel’s stance on Iraq, as well as his criticism of the president and members of his cabinet (see: Alberto Gonzales), put the incumbent out of touch with the majority of Nebraskans.
“Nebraska is more conservative than the nation as a whole,” Bruning told NEWSWEEK. “Senator Hagel, however, has become more liberal. And for some reason he has an anger to George Bush that is not particularly productive.”
How substantive a threat does Bruning pose? No reliable independent sounding has yet been taken. According to a poll recently commissioned by Bruning’s office, he finds himself 9 percentage points ahead of Hagel in a head-to-head contest.

This article is the first public one I've seen indicating that Hagel may be facing a tough challenge next year.
I read the article over lunch today and I found it to be pretty fair and accurate. According to the article, "Hagel has voted with the president more than any other member of the U.S. Senate, according to a tally done by Congressional Quarterly."

Jon Bruning was interviewed on TGO’s show a week or two ago, and he was very impressive. Seems solidly conservative and very personable.

How did he vote on the Amnesty bill? If he voted for Amnesty, along w/ his other sins, I'd consider supporting his primary opponent.

“Chuck Hagel’s antiwar stance could make him a serious Republican candidate for the White House in 2008...” Not. Consider the source of this: Newsweek. A wholly owned subsidiary of the Wash Post, whose reporters think any Republican who opposes the war is a sure bet. In their dreams. I feel like sending this Bruning guy some money. Hagel’s head has become so large he has trouble passing through doorways. Also, he voted for the immigration bill. So thumbs down on Hagel.
Hagel has gone from an ACU rating of 96 in 2005, to one of 75, in 2006

What is going to p.o. everyone is when other Senate Republicans, even ones that we would think would not do so, will end up in Nebraska campaigning for Hagel. Liberal or not he is still a club member.

Well that’s what happens when one keeps running headlong into a brick wall that is the illegal alien issue.
George’s pissed off a lot of people with this latest immigration bill. I support the foreign policy to the end, but from the domestic perspective, only thing worse in my mind than the proposed immigration legislation is a prospect for socialist health care.
As did I.
