Late-Breaking Surge for Thompson
National Review Online ^ | 2 January 2008 | Peter Robinson

The latest news from Iowa? According to Zogby’s latest—and I quote: “Sen. Fred Thompson…has seen a late-breaking surge.” (Rich notes the same poll below.)

What’s going on here? My guess is that there are whole lot of Iowa Republicans who have about the same attitude that David Limbaugh displayed in his column yesterday:

Fred is the only [candidate] I don't have major reservations about….I find his lack of "fire in the belly" refreshing. He strikes me as one of the few presidential candidates since Ronald Reagan whose primary motivation is not personal aggrandizement but rather serving and leading the nation in very troubled and dangerous times. I see him as almost being drafted into this project, and his refusal to drool publicly over the prospect of becoming the most powerful man in the world is positively delightful.

My assignment?
Huh?
I knew you were insane, and now I know the exact diagnosis: paranoid personality disorder.

I want people to vote for Fred in Iowa.
I just wish he had been doing a better job at convincing them to do it, giving them better reasons to vote for him, talking about his experience and qualifications, talking about the committees he’s chaired on national security issues. Then he wouldn’t be fighting John McCain for a distant 3rd.

“The fact that Fred has not made this the central issue in his campaign is what stands out.”

[You are really scraping and scratching for this. You must be frantic to invent something negative to say about Fred.]

Why are you replying to me on this?

Fred needs to understand that the big bucks are holding back right now because HE IS HOLDING BACK.

Most accurate thing you have posted, but it's a little backwards....

That’s nice. But my query remains: how many campaigns have you won, run, or even worked on?

I only had minor reservations about Fred Thompson until I saw the behavior of some of his most zealous supporters on Free Republic.

Bravo Sierra. Grow up.

That’s good to hear.
Unfortunately he hasn’t done much of that when it counted — at the debates or on major national TV appearances.

“I know Rush will not sponsor any candidate in the primaries, but he shouldn’t ignore the only conservative Republicans in the race.”

Fred Thompson is not the ‘only conservative’! Duncan Hunter is also a ‘true conservative’. I want a leader though...who is a leader?

I talked to a guy in Iowa today who said his wife called him right after seeing Fred speak. She had been supporting someone else, I don’t know who, maybe Huckabee or Romney, but immediately switched to Fred. He had been on the fence—she convinced him to vote for Fred.

“No, I would have Fred run a better campaign that convinces more people to vote for him.”

You mean, you wouldn’t run it into the ground? You must be a Fred hater.

A 17 minute closing argument web video for Iowa?

Yeah. We get it. You didn't like the video. Perhaps the next FDT thread, you could tell us about it. Like the last 10.

Yes that is the normal experience. I don’t know many who have the opposite experience it is why everybody has Fred on their short list. I don’t know what it is that is keeping them from making that final plunge. The media are largely responsible for suppressing Fred’s support. They clearly don’t want him and would rather have Huck or Mitt for their Democrat candidate to run against. The establishment Republicans secretly want McCain or Romney. McCain is a long shot but they certainly don’t want Thompson who they don’t have in their hip pocket.

“I just wish he had been doing a better job at convincing them to do it”

How many hours will you spend posting about it?

And what good does it do, posting this in the days leading up to Iowa?

I swear, it’s like I’m talking to school children. And the ones riding the short bus, at that. Do you believe Fred’s campaign is on target?

I have decided that Fred is the best man for the job. It's not my job to quarterback, it's his.

My job and the job of those who support him is to do what I can to supports his run, not make a negative comment every time I mention his name.

All campaigns are a craps shoot, but Fred's run and won before. I'll stick with him and if I have anything constructive to offer, I'll email Sean at the campaign. I won't sit on a forum and deliver slam after slam without ever touting him to others or celebrating his good news.

It's one thing to occasionally hammer a point. It's quite another to continually swing a sledge hammer at the whole project.

Hate to tell you, but Rasmussen has the most accurate polls.
Zogby has been way off since 9/11.
