Hunter to withdraw? Nope, he fools us
LA Times ^ | Jan. 7, 2008 | Don Frederick

UPDATE -- Our apologies to Duncan Hunter. He used the "major announcement" we got notice about earlier -- and assumed, wrongly, meant he would be folding his presidential tent -- to decry his exclsuion from the pair of Republican candidate debates this weekend.

"Who do they think they are?" he said of media big shots. He also noted that he won a delegate from the caucuses in Wyoming on Saturday, which puts him ahead of Rudy Giuliani in that category. And he said he would remain a candidate "no matter what happens" in New Hampshire's Tuesday primary.

All signs point to a poor showing for Hunter. But he hopes that

I call it a start. How did you do in this race?

You know, Aunt B, this is the second time in a month where you’ve posted something about me that isn’t ‘real’ and isn’t supported by anything I’ve ever posted.

I called you on it the last time, and you’ve yet to respond.

Its disappointing. I associate that kind of stuff with my anti groupies at LP.

“Unfortunately, he never caught on with the GOP base...”

Unfortunately, you’re right. Thompson has a better chance to make something happen and has better face/name recognition. It would be nice if Hunter put his support behind Fred rather than going down as the lone idealist.

If crazy McCain also joined Fred’s camp with support, we’d really have something going, but McCain’s going as far as he can before the men with white coats take him away.

Yep.

I’m not ‘happy’ about this, not by a long shot.

The title you created "Hunter doesn’t drop out, he fights back!" wasn't the title at the source and had to be changed. Please do not alter titles of any published material. Just use the title found directly above the article.

We're trying to reduce the number of duplicate threads. When you create your own title, Free Republic's search engine will not show that a story has already been posted.

Thanks.

Huckster & McAmnesty were boosted by MSM.

Excellent example. Thanks for reminding me.

Huckabee broke out because he had a valuable network of churches that started working for him. Duncan needs a big backer that can help him get his message out, above the heads of the gate-keepers. Reagan had such backers, his kitchen cabinet from California, or else he could never have defeated the Rockefeller wing of the GOP and remade the party as conservative. If Duncan doesn't get that kind of support (or if McCain's anti-free speech laws prevent such donations these days), yeah, he probably can't find a way to break out. He isn't well known enough to force them to cover him.

But that doesn't mean his efforts are wasted. He can continue to spread his message, influence the other candidates, and begin to become more well known. Maybe he translates his work into a cabinet position, or as a spokesman for a cause. Maybe that allows him to be better positioned in 2012. Who knows how events will unfold. The thing is, he is pursuing his dream of restoring conservatism to the White House, and I thank him for doing that for all of us. He's doing what's right, in the face of long odds. Thank God for such men.

Why should he give up ? It’s not your money he’s spending.

He’s one of the few conservatives left in the race.

My first reaction to this news was to drop my opinion of Hunter a notch. I thought, “Here is a guy who I really like but he has no chance of being president and he is just wasting good peoples time and money.” I thought he would do his cause better to drop out and endorse Fred. But a second thought popped into my mind - with the chances of a brokered convention looking greater every day, I don’t know as any of the candidates will drop out know even if they only have a chance to pick up a 5 or 6 delegates in states that award them proportionally. Rather than just endorsing another candidate when they know they can’t win all of the guys still in the race may now hold out for king-making opportunities at the convention.

I agree ! Hunter truly IS the REAL DEAL !

I’m in NH. The phone rang this morning. I answered it, and it was an “automated recording” doing a political (GOP) poll. What really ticked me off, was that their questions only offered me a choice of Romney, McCain, or Huckabee for my responses - THEY HAD ALREADY NARROWED THE FIELD DOWN TO 3 CANDIDATES !! What if I was a Ron Paul supporter?? Or Fred ? Or HUNTER ( who I do support) ? I’ll tell you, I’m really disgusted with the way the media has excluded some of the candidates. It’s WAY too early in the race to exclude anybody, unless the candidate chooses to drop out.

I am a brand new U.S. Citizen (as of Dec. 14th) and tomorrow I will proudly cast my very first vote ever for DUNCAN HUNTER!

Why would I settle for second best, when I can vote for HUNTER ??!!

‘Why should he give up ?’

Because its clear he can’t win. And he runs the risk of being catagorized like Alan Keyes. I’d rather Congressman Hunter avoid that, I respect him...unlike Keyes.

’ It’s not your money he’s spending.’

Assumption on your part, don’t you think?

‘He’s one of the few conservatives left in the race.’

Yep. We’re a minority politically. always have been if your honest with yourself.

They are, of course. The business they work for gets revenue from the candidates. If you’re not advertising, you’re not a customer.
