GGG Ping.
Gee, I thought this was going to be about the GOP...
I thought the consensus was that, given the erosion pattern of the island, the location is probably under several feet of water offshore at this point, and anything like post holes long-gone.

Thanks Blam. They should have put the Lost Colony's face on a milk bottle, IMHO. |

The Roanoke colony was probably captured by the Spanish and carried away into slavery.
I don’t know. Having lived and worked in that area several times in my life I have to think they mixed in with what are now the Lumbee Indians. Very unique looking people.
Unique looking features have more to do with what is called “the founders effect” than intermarriage with Europeans.
They always had the legends in NC about the Lumbees that were found later with blue eyes and knew English words. Lots of folklore around the colony.
NC ping please?

Much more likely that they were taken away by local Indian tribes, with whom some of the colonists survived for many years. If you’re seriously interested in the topic, get yourself a copy the book a few years ago by Lee Miller. I found it very persuasive.
I’ve always believed that the Croatoans got most of them but the rest are the ancestors of the melungeons. I vaguely remember a post on ggg about a DNA study of melungeons but can’t find it now.
Didn't happen. The Spanish archives have been ransacked, and the Spaniards didn't have a clue what had happened to it. They were still worrying as late as several years after it disappeared that it was still active.
I’ll say it: Space aliens.
The aliens stole it and buried it near Los Alamos!!!

That was an outstanding book!
For those familiar with the solutrian migration theory the Lumbee population might represent a population of people descended from original ice-age migrants who made it here from Europe around 50,000 years ago. Many early European explorers noted indigenous people along the east coast who had blue eyes and some with blond and red hair. The red hair and blue eyes also played a part in the god legends of the Aztecs.
