Why Are Many Conservatives Leaders Endorsing McCain? (Vanity)
2/5/2008 | Self

Posted on 02/05/2008 5:58:30 AM PST by Obadiah

Serious question. John McCain has a conservative rating of something like 88%. He is a "maverick" who genuinely seems more comfortable working with Democrats. John McCain has dissed conservatives on numerous occasions and authored such abhorent legistaion such as McCain/Feingold. He is for open borders (depending on the day you ask him).

Now, Sam Brownback, Tom Coburn, Phil Gramm, Jack Kemp, Ted Olson, Richard Land, and perhaps Nancy Reagan have either formally endorsed or have voiced support for John McCain? Why are these people endorsing McCain??

Seriously, I cannot grasp this. Why do I have this big disconnect? I do not want John McCain. Why is he being rammed down our throats?

Is it simply "his turn"? Is it because there is no alternative now? Why didn't more people jump on the Fred bandwagon? Do we really want Bob Dole 2.0?

The MSM have had a love afair with McCain as they do with RINOs like Chuck Hagel, Richard Lugar, or any other "Republican" willing to spit on other Republicans. McCain seriously considered switching Parties. McCain was seriously considered as John Kerry's running mate. What's going on?

Please stop calling them "conservative" leaders.

"Conservative leaders endorsing McCain" is oxymoronic.

They've wimped out and have decided to settle.

I doubt a conservative would be as rash as

McCain

who promises to transfer all Gitmo prisoners to Ft. Leavenworth his first day as President

You would think McCain would want to get a little more information before making such a decision...information that only the President knows.

BTW, one report says Leavenworth is almost filled already.

It would seem that a majority of GOP primary voters want McCain. JMO but he’s the best chance the GOP has to keep the Oval Office. He’s good on National Security, and the WOT, also a deficit hawk. He appeals to moderates of both parties. JMO again, but it’s going to take a centrists to win in Nov. and that’s for either party. Should the Dems. nominate their newest flavor of the month in Obama, I expect him to get steamrolled by McCain.

Fortunately those being chased by fear have the promise "I will never leave you nor forsake you"

Amen, and we can also take comfort in the fact that God raises evil rulers to demonstrate his power and majesty.

Romans 9
17For the scripture saith unto Pharaoh, Even for this same purpose have I raised thee up, that I might shew my power in thee, and that my name might be declared throughout all the earth.
18 Therefore hath he mercy on whom he will have mercy, and whom he will he hardeneth.

You answered your own question in your first two sentences. One is a fact, the other is an opinion.

When opinion tsunamis the facts, you can know that pride has finally metastasized into every quarter of our political persuasion.

This Freeper included :-(

1 Peter 5:6
Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time:

I couldn’t agree more! The “true” conservatives are run around trying to cut their noses off. For what? So Hitlery or Obama run this country in to the dirt. My mans Newt, but all the “true” repubs told him he’s not electable. McCain is electable if the “true” repubs aren’t simply going to spite their face. McCain will keep this country safe & elect Judges we like. Just see what kind of Judges Hill or Osama put in!

Yes indeed... Also Judges 7 God tells Gideon there were toooooo many with Gideon for the people to know God gave the victory... seems there is a strong wind blowing the chaff from the wheat... winnowing. Paul says ICorinthians 10:11 Now all these things happened unto them for ensamples (examples): and they are written for our admonition (warning), upon whom the ends of the world (age) are come... sign of the times...

God gave the victory

That truth reverberates throughout all scripture:

Joshua 4
23 For the LORD your God dried up the waters of Jordan from before you, until ye were passed over, as the LORD your God did to the Red sea, which he dried up from before us, until we were gone over:
24 That all the people of the earth might know the hand of the LORD, that it is mighty: that ye might fear the LORD your God for ever.

Joshua 9
13 And it came to pass, when Joshua was by Jericho, that he lifted up his eyes and looked, and, behold, there stood a man over against him with his sword drawn in his hand: and Joshua went unto him, and said unto him, Art thou for us, or for our adversaries?
14 And he said, Nay; but as captain of the host of the LORD am I now come. And Joshua fell on his face to the earth, and did worship, and said unto him, What saith my Lord unto his servant?

Psalm 44
5 Through thee will we push down our enemies: through thy name will we tread them under that rise up against us.
6 For I will not trust in my bow, neither shall my sword save me.
7 But thou hast saved us from our enemies, and hast put them to shame that hated us.

1 Chronicles 29:11
Thine, O LORD is the greatness, and the power, and the glory, and the victory, and the majesty: for all that is in the heaven and in the earth is thine; thine is the kingdom, O LORD, and thou art exalted as head above all.

Ephesians 6:12
For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.

1 Corinthians 15:55
55 O death, where is thy sting? O grave, where is thy victory?

Rammed down your throat?

Huh?

I don’t like McCain either, but the party has to have a nominee. Not enough conservatives-—or maybe there are not as many conservatives out there as people think-—rallied around the more conservative candidates and they . . . dropped out.

Thompson and Hunter and who knows who else would be in the race IF conservatives had pushed them into the top tier. But they were NOT supported.

What does that say to these leaders you list? That conservatives are NOT powerful or NOT as numerous or NOT as united as one may think. Therefore, the party casts about for an alternative and, unfortunately, the only one out there is McCain.

You can be sure that had conservatives in sufficient numbers supported a candidate to the extent that he actually emerged as viable, that conservative candidate would be the man right now.

All that’s happened here is that conservatives have shown they can’t deliver the vote in a primary. That’s why TPTB now view them as more or less irrelevant to the rest of the race.

Believe me, I’m not saying I agree with TPTB. I’m just explaining what I think their point of view here is.

In short, this is what it looks like from RINO-land:

1. Conservatives couldn’t get a (more) conservative candidate even out of the bottom tier in the primaries.

2. The more those same people rail about not voting in the general election, the more we (The RINO PTB) better find a way to win without them now.

3. The only chance the RINOs have to win without conservatives is to back someone who has a chance of picking up lots of Rats and Independents. The main man for that is (in their view) McCain.

It’s really that simple. Conservatives have shown themselves too weak (either in numbers or in will) to be a player in this election, so TPTB are moving on without them. Sad, but it is what it is.

There are two classes of people in the GOP:

Those who are Republican because they are conservative.

Those that are conservative because they are Republican.

The second group will support McCain.
