Where do I go to find someone who can sort out my home telecom, cable, net and network issues

I have three computers and need more than one hooked to the net but with blocking for the kids. I also need a line to a computer in a different room. I am spending over 200 per month on various telecom and am not sure I need it. I need to figure out what is needed where. Who or what should I call and how much should I expect to spend?

I thought of calling a Best Buy guy who lives in our town. Is this a good idea?

I've read through the thread and here's my contribution:

  1. Hope the kid emergency has passed and everyone's okay!
  2. I concur with avoiding Best Buy's "Geek Squad." Horror stories.
  3. I further concur with using OpenDNS for your filtering needs. Client-based filters that are installed on the desktop are too easily defeated. Short of installing your own content-filtering firewall, this is the most direct solution. But if you're set on monitoring downloads, both Linksys and D-Link offer content-filtering wireless routers that may be what you need.
  4. As for dropping your land-line phone service, consider your potential need for 911 services and/or sending faxes. Those are typically the only reasons for keeping a land-line. If you don't see a need, by all means...dump it.
  5. If you're going with wireless (and you sound like you have some experience with it), I personally recommend 802.11n for your home network if you already offer 802.11b or 802.11g for your tenants. This keeps things nice and separate.

Hope this helps.

My neighbors probably use my service for free and that is OK with me.

Cool. Your one neighbor that is using your wireless connection to download child porn and the others that are downloading pirated music thank you.
