Colin Powell in McCain mix
Politco ^ | August 23, 2008 | Mike Allen

Posted on 08/23/2008 7:17:50 PM PDT by Plutarch

Retired Gen. Colin Powell is among the potential running mates who have been considered by John McCain, campaign advisers told Politico.

Powell was among the possible vice presidential choices the Arizona Republican senator was thinking of when he said he would not rule out a supporter of abortion rights, a key adviser said.

Campaign officials say McCain has told them not to discuss the process.

Powell, who was President Bush's first secretary of state, would add celebrity to the ticket, as well as reinforce McCain's strength as a potential commander in chief, which his campaign considers to be one of his chief assets.

But outside advisers say they believe former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, a McCain rival for the Republican nomination, is the leading candidate.

McCain plans to announce his choice Friday in Dayton, Ohio.

I have no idea. I don't watch TeeVee and haven't read anything about or comments he might have made.

Powell is a good man but doesn't care much if anything for politics.Besides at age 71 he's probably happy doing whatever he is doing in private life...;))

With those difference he probably should not have been named SECSTATE. Then again he should have cleaned house when he arrived ... Clinton and Bush 41 holdovers had a different agenda than Bush43. I actually had high hopes when he was nominated.

“But if we’re going to play this game, don’t forget that Condi Rice is both black and female.”

and as inspiring a choice as a potted plant. Here’s the thing: if you think Condi Rice, the most vilified black woman in Black America is going to win 1% of black votes, I got news for you: ain’t gonna happen. Just remember some of the awful cartoons about her being Bush’s jive-talkin’ parrot. As far as a female goes, we could do a hell of a lot better with Palin.

Is there a conservative who isn’t under some sort of a trumped up investigation?

In Palin’s case it is over her firing of the Public Safety Commissioner. She says she let him go because she wanted to take the department in a “new direction.” He says it is because he refused to fire her ex-brother-in-law who had divorced her sister.

The fired Director is of course, a Democrat.

Sound familiar?

Powell is a viper and social liberal.

He would bring NOTHING - NADA - to a national ticket.

And I heard he’s actually supporting the Obamanation.

"Powell is a Democrat pretending to be a Republican" I don't see that conflicting with McCain in any way.

It would take the writers for the late nite media hacks about 15 seconds to pick up on who Palin resembles. From then on she would be a laughing stock.

I don’t think this will happen. Too many ties to Bush.

Um...he is not a conservative ...and he probably support Obama:

Weekly Standard editor Bill Kristol repeated Thursday that sources have told him they expect former Secretary of State Colin Powell will endorse Barack Obama , though the former secretary of state has denied reports that he will speak at the Democratic National Convention.

“We all talk to people who talk to people and there are people close to the Obama campaign in the course of conversations who made clear to me that there was very high level discussions. … The Obama people expect Powell to endorse him,” Kristol told FOX News.

“With those differences he probably should not have been named SecState.

Probably, being that he was more of a moderate, especially social and I don’t think a lot of conservatives in the government saw eye to eye with him and vice versa.

“I still think he’s going to choose Lieberman”

I don’t think he’s willing to commit political suicide at this juncture, even for friendship. What I’m thinking is that he’ll give him a key cabinet post, maybe secretary of state. But I’m pretty sure he’s had a “come to Jesus” meeting(s)/moment such that even HE’S not going to blow the advantage he’s gained right now by picking JL for veep.

I believe him when he says he’d rather lose an election than lose a war - but I’m pretty sure he’d rather not lose an election needlessly over a really bad choice.

There seems to be a thread every few hrs. giving the name of some moderate or lib. who is probably going to be VP.

Some are started by McCain bashers, some for no reason or value. and others ?

If McCain picks a mod conservative or conservative, it will dissapoint many on FR.

"McCain plans to announce his choice Friday in Dayton, Ohio."

I posted this earlier on another FR "McCain VP pick" thread.

IMHO, since the ECONOMY has risen to the #1 issue in this election, McCain needs to pick someone with experience in economic issues, of which Obama & Plugs have NO real experience in, and McCain is seen as weak when it comes to the economy.

McCain needs a pro-life, CONSERVATIVE on the ticket.

On August 29th, in Dayton, Ohio, I would like to see McCain announce that John Kasich is his pick for VP.

I believe he would be able to go one-on-one with "plugs" with NO-PROBLEM WHAT-SO-EVER, and be able to show that Obama & Plugs tax & spend ideas would be a DISASTER, and Plugs wouldn't be able to counter-punch him so easily because Kasich could back it up with experience, numbers and FACTS.

McCain has the CIC thing covered to counter "Plugs", and Kasich could be the "attack dog" for the economy part.

I was doing a "McCain-Kasich website" Google search, and came across this article with a recent interview with him. My fellow FReepers, PLEASE read the article and see what Kasich has to say about how the Republicans need to get back to more "conservative roots". The article was a really great eye-opener for me as far as who would be a GREAT pick for VP.Read how hard Kasich has beeen working GRASS-ROOTS-LEVEL in Ohio for the last 15 months.

I keep hearing from the Lame-Stream-Media Obama-bots that NO REPUBLICAN has won POTUS without taking Ohio. Kasich has done enough work there to date that just might put it in the McCain column to stay, plus the Wall Street crowd would probably REALLY like to see a McCain-Kasich ticket to be able to stop the "tax-the-rich-and-give-to-the-non-earning-Marxists party".

PLEASE PLEASE read the article.

I think it's a winning ticket!!

August 29th in Dayton OHIO, McCain-Kasich '08??

I'm in.

“Yeah, but, she’s GOT to be older than 71, isn’t she? Who’s 4th in line?”

LOL - no, she just LOOKS like she is - since she’s not DOING any work, she needs to GET some work done (if you know what I mean :-)))))) she’s like 67 or 68. Guess the outer reflects the inner.

Next in line for succession is pres. pro tem of senate - Bob Byrd - arghhh - he’s like 90 or 91!!!! Then sec. of state.

re: I really don’t get the hate for powell

For me it's not hate. It's just a total lack of respect. He knew early on who had leaked Valerie Plame’s name to the press and stood by while the investigation went on another two years, ending in a process indictment and conviction.

I don't think his State Department served the Bush administration well at all. It seemed like he was in a constant mode of passive aggression toward the goals and aims of the administration.

There are too many well qualified, quite conservative people out there to serve as VP. I would not be happy with his nomination to the position. Let me hasten to assure one and all though, it would not keep me from voting for McCain.

McCain has been treading on thin ice with the conservative base for years. I would hate to see him kick us in the butt, yet again, and go for a pro-choicer. Again, it would not cost him my vote, but I don't see the gain in further aggravation of the base.
