Large and dangerous Hurricane Ike approaching the Upper Texas coast. Mandatory evacuations began in earnest Thursday as an estimated one million coastal residents headed inland. There were widespread reports of gas stations running out of fuel.
The National Weather Service posted dire storm surge predictions of 20-25 ft storm surge along the coast and bay heads. Hurricane warnings covered a 400 mile swath of the Gulf of Mexico.
Wholesale gasoline prices spiked 30 percent Thursday, or nearly $1 a gallon, out of fear of what Ike might do.

Thanks for the prayers. We’re going to need them and I’m 75 miles from the coast. But this is such a big storm I’ll be sitting in high winds all night starting about midnight.
No, how do you get on that one?
Because that’s what Momma said to do.
It probably goes back to when everyone got their water from wells.
I was going to use the ladder...
See post #1439.
I hate hate hate dark landfalls.
Crystal Beach is the far “East” end of the island. That means it’s on the North end which means it’s in the worse possible location.
Here is a twenty-foot storm surge simulation of Galveston:

Considering that the father isn’t off the island he may very well end up joining his son in heaven.
in crystal beach
15 people on roof of church - 3 more people on roof across the street from the church
so a total of 18 people so far needing rescue in crystal beach (BTW I don’t know where it is)
That's a good idea. I don't mind if I'm up after midnight. I don't want to be asleep if there's any tornado activity.
Thanx!

I started looking when I read your post, SE Mom.
A Metrolink commuter train has collided with a freight train in Los Angeles.
One car of the Metrolink train has derailed along with what appears to be the engine of the freight.
There’s a live link at the website.
I hate to say this but Ike will probably set a record for number of deaths.
“When you see pine needles stuck half way through regular glass you know the wind is strong.”
I remember pine needles being stuck in the brick in our house after Frederick in South Mississippi....very freaky
Hi, ping list! So far, Ike isn’t impressing this zip code. A tad bit gusty, but the wind is more audible than tangible.
Only done hurricanes in Texas.
Granddaughter has done them in NC (coastal), Texas, and typhoons in Japan.
The lessons from our childhood are lost on some people. Wonder if he is beginning to remember what happen to the three little pigs.
