This isn’t news, we’ve had a strange methane producing material at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue since 20 January 2009.

Wouldn’t it be wild if Mars were found to contain vast reserves of oil and natural gas?

Methane is one of the building blocks of the Universe. The primorial atmosphere of earth consisted of larely carbon dioxide, ammonia, water vapor and methane, with quite a bit of the “noble gases” (argon, krypton, neon, radon, xenon, even helium) present. Over time, the carbon dioxide and water were broken down to free oxygen, by biological activity, freeing this highly reactive gas to react with the methane and ammonia, resulting in free nitrogen, a generally unreactive gas, and scads of extra water. The carbon dioxide that resulted from the combustion of methane in the oxygen atmosphere was greedily taken up by the explosive growth of photosynthesizing vegetation, further increasing the ratios of oxygen in the atmosphere.
And that, dear children, is why the atmosphere has the following composition:
Name-Symbol-Percent by Volume
Nitrogen-N2-78.084 %
Oxygen-O2-20.9476 %
Argon-Ar-0.934 %
Carbon
Dioxide-CO2-0.0384 %
Neon-Ne-0.001818 %
Methane-CH4-0.0002 %
Helium-He-0.000524 %
Krypton-Kr-0.000114 %
Hydrogen-H2-0.00005 %
Xenon-Xe-0.0000087 %
Oh, yeah. And water vapor. Highly variable, from less than 1% to as much as 4% of the atmosphere.

Oh no! Serpentine, in its fibrous form, is the most common type of ASBESTOS (white clump at top of pic). Future builders of Mars colonies will be forced to clean it up or face massive lawsuits...

On Earth the gas is made mostly by animals as a by-product although it can also be produced naturally in the absence of life2.
Most of the methane percolating up from deep within the earth both on land and at sea is from abiogenic sources.
