Following a serious earthquake that hit China's Qinghai province, hundreds of people, mainly of Tibetan nationality, are believed to have died and thousands more are injured. The China Earthquake Administration put the magnitude at 7.1, which is just a little higher than the earthquake that hit Haiti back in January. The US Geological Survey have reported it being a little lower at 6.9. Whatever the exact figure, there are people in danger and, with this being such a remote area, rescue attempts are being seriously hampered. A particular point of concern is that temperatures are around zero and, without shelter, many more people could die of hypothermia.

In the 1600s there was an earthquake in China that killed several 100s of 1,000s...
To: Tennessee Nana
IIRC, there was one in 1976 too that killed many thousands.

God please have mercy on their souls.
It's weird that an earthquake on the small island of Haiti killed 223,000 but and earthquake in China killed 'only' hundreds.

Why is that weird? If the earthquake had happened under red square in Peking, imagine the death toll. China is a big country, little earthquake.

All these earthquakes (big ones) that the world has experienced as of late make me wonder if God is trying to tell us something.
"For nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom: and there shall be earthquakes in divers places, and there shall be famines and troubles: these are the beginnings of sorrows."

Agreed. It is the location of the quake that limited the carnage. There are vast areas in western china that are sparsely populated.

There was a huge one in the 1500’s, but one doesn’t need to go back that far - about 250,000 were killed in 1976 by a large earthquake.

It's weird that an earthquake on the small island of Haiti killed 223,000 but and earthquake in China killed 'only' hundreds. Construction standards (or lack thereof) make a huge difference. Recall that a few weeks ago, there was a huge (8.8) earthquake in Chile, with a death toll of "only" a few hundred.
