Its come to this: The Texas budget outlook has become so bleak that were comparing rather favorably to the one state where balanced budgeting goes to die.
People, our budget deficit is now as bad as Californias.
That fact may not sit well with some peopleespecially in the governors office, which loves to bash California and never misses an opportunity to point out how Texas low-tax, business-friendly model has led to a more robust economy and sound state finances.
When California faced a $60 billion deficit last yeara shortfall that was bigger than the entire budget of most statesyou could almost hear the chortling from the Texas governors office. It seemed a handy example of what happens when you put big-spending liberals in charge.
It wasnt that simple, though. The causes of Californias problemsand Texas lack thereofwere varied and complex. And now the states budget deficits are looking very similar.
Texas: $18 billion shortfall (estimated) or about 20 percent of state spending.
California: $19.1 billion shortfall (official estimate) or about 20 percent of state spending.
The numbers match up pretty neatly.
You can read a breakdown of Californias proposed budget for next year here.
The days when Texas leaders could mock Californiaor at least its budget messappear to be over.

Gee, what do we have in common with California?
Democrat footprints are all over this.
Perry needs to kick out the illegals.
A problem that is centered in Austin, spun from Austin and largely wouldn’t exist without Austin. This has a simple solution and I think Texans recognize it.
It doesn’t matter how conservative you are in terms taxes and business, if you can’t get control of the socialist spending. Big government equals big debt.
The income may be down in Texas, but California has obstacles which make their circumstances less palatable.
Union state employees are far greater in number in California. Also, the Texas Constitution requires a balanced budget which will make it less difficult for the Texas courts to force the state to continue spending money which they do not have.
This is a lefty rag.
I suspect it'll be the same in Texas.
I do no believe Mann.... He is Whites whippin boy.
I see new road an infrastructure being maintained an aside from some rat infested towns that have spent themselves broke Texas from my view is better than but under Erkel Mugabe no state is safe much less the nation....
My opinion an observations...
Cheap burritos.
This is a silly article and an even sillier, dishonest exerpt.
The author’s caveats, which are left out of the posted exerpt, destroy the intended point of the article.
There is likely no budget deficit at all in Texas; and if there is, the legislature should have no serious problem in eliminating it.
...Isn’t that like saying “No Chinese —> No Chinese-buffet”?
LMAO
Damn straight.
In addition, if Goodhair would follow Arizona's lead, we'd be the wealthiest Republic on earth.
Seems to be a lot of that down there nowadays...
How about this?
Is this a lefty rag too?

Texas budget shortfall widens to $18 billion (2011 'to be painful)
star-telegram.com 5/11/2010 DAVE MONTGOMERY
AUSTIN -- The state government's fiscal outlook worsened Tuesday as the chief budget writer... said a projected shortfall facing lawmakers is at least $18 billion.
Chairman Jim Pitts, R-Waxahachie, was considerably higher than previous projections and came on a day filled with mostly bad news as Pitts' committee looked toward the looming budget crunch.
Straus mentioned a number of possibilities to consider, including having unpaid furloughs for state employees, moving to a four-day workweek, freezing top-level state salaries and imposing a moratorium on proposed new programs that would add to the state's spending needs.
....lawmakers will examine revenue-raising options such as expanding gambling, increasing fees and eliminating some tax exemptions.
The state's gloomy budget picture is largely the result of tumbling state revenue because of the nation's economic downturn.
Lawmakers will also face demands to increase state school aid because of declining school property tax revenue at the local level.
..... "We cannot balance a budget with cuts alone."
....lawmakers should lift some of the tax exemptions and suggested an increase in the gasoline tax....
Umm.. Illegal alien hordes sucking the lifeblood out of taxpayers?
Just a guess... I dunno.
More Like “No Chinese -—> No Chinese Lead-Based Toys” or “No Chinese ——> No Melamine-fortified Dog Food”.
Actually I was thinking of Chinese immigrants... especially the ones that have a chinese-food place.
And probably because I’m getting hungry.
Really?
Here's another dose of silly, complete with link...
