Jerusalem is weighing the annexation of the major settlement blocs if Palestinians seek unilateral recognition of statehood, an official in Jerusalem told AP on Tuesday. The official said that "adopting unilateral measures is not a one-way street," and that it was not the only option being considered, according to the report. He cautioned, however, that he was not aware of how seriously the political leadership was considering such a bold move. Other responses to Palestinian unilateralism could include reducing water access below agreed upon levels, as well as restricting the use of Israeli ports for Palestinian imports and exports, AP

I think it is called war.
They should peel what they need from Jordan as per the original basis for Jordan or go and take the land form one of the other immediate muslim nations who are always intermeddling.
I got an idea.
Tell the Palis they ARE a state.
And turn off the water, and power that Israel has been providing (for free, IIRC). Same for health care. The Palis can provide their own. Also let ‘em know that any hostile acts (mortar rounds and rockers are hostile acts) will be met with an ultimatum, to be followed by Total War.
Downside is that the Israelis will have to end their blockade, meaning that the Iranian will be able smuggle in some really nasty weapons.
Well some rockers are, but not KISS!.......................
I’m all for the palestinians, but I question whether they deserve their own state. Isn’t that what many on the left say about Israel?
(tongue in cheek, I think)
Anschluss? Nein, danke!
Or they can just sit there and dodge rockets and mortars for another decade.
They shouldn’t weigh annexation, they should announce it as the planned response. The Palis have to know that if they act unilaterally, Israel will essentially take those areas off the table forever. They should do so anyway, but they’ve put them in play (foolishly) so that would be very difficult for them to do unilaterally right now.
BTW, since no one asked, I was sad when Rabin was assassinated, but the plain fact is that what he did in allowing the PLO to gain control of the arab areas of the so-called West Bank and giving them legitimacy was the greatest blunder in the history of the modern State of Israel. The present conundrum, on top of the murder and maiming of thousands of Israelis, all stem from that act.
High damned time. Thanks Nachum.

Funny, that.
They should immediately annex Judea (Jew-day-uh, from whence the name Jew is derived) and Samaria. The high ground can never be given to these blood thristy savages to rain missiles down on the coastal plain.
Thought you all might want to look at this article which forecasts a probable usage against Israel of the Libyan “responsibility to protect” doctrine. Perhaps this proposed annexation may be an attempt to forestall the “R2P”??

It is hard to think of the fate of certain people and not connect it with a power that is the antithesis of coincidence. We may never know, but it is not wrong to think in these terms if one believes that Hashem is in control of everything.
Ahhh. Annexation. A beautiful dream. But, in spite of the absolutely vital strategic importance of these precious lands, the mass psychosis that passes for public opinion will not have it. The psychotics masquerading as politicians quiver with each tick of the opinion polls and think only of the next vote they can beg, borrow or steal. Exhibit A: Obama, yemach shemo.
Just annex, already, and throw those bums out of Ramallah.
Indeed. The whole point of negotiating a 2 state agreement is not about settlements. It is about cooperation on issues such as water (and many others).
If Palestinians do not want to negotiate then, I agree with you, Israel should announce its plans. Israel withdrew from Gaza, it can withdraw from some of the West Bank too - it doesn’t even need the Palestinians to declare a state.
What is never thought about or talked about is how much the Palestinians need Israel. Someone up-thread mentioned water, electricity and hospitals. Yes that is true. But so much more! Roads, transportation, importation and export of foods. Currency (Palestinians use Israeli currency, what are they going to do start printing their own?). Not to mention that as a state the Palestinians best friend will be Israel - Israel will be their #1 employer and #1 trading partner.
All that goes away if the Palestinians don’t negotiate a deal but go for one unilaterally.
And ultimately the reason Israel would unilaterally annex land is because there are about 400,000 Israelis living there AND because Israel’s water/sewage system is connected to the underground reservoirs there as well. Israel is not going to unilaterally relinquish water rights it has used (and has international right to use because of prior use rights) for almost 50 years.
Good post.
I am not nearly as optomistic as you are that a negotiated settlement will bring about a symbiotic or any kind of mutuality between Israel and the PLO state. My understanding, FWIW, is that the goal of Palestinian statehood is nothing less than the long-held dream of destroying Israel. One perilously underestimates the fervor of Arabs in their passionate causes and vengeance and anti-Semitism are their most passionate causes. No amount of self-interest will deter them from their goal.
The only chance of changing this reality peacefully, would be if the Palestinians were de-Nazified, the way Germany was after WWII: all anti-Israel and anti-Semitic propoganda would have to be wiped out, outlawed and replaced with an equally vigorous campaign to promote a benign, if not friendly attitude towards Israel and Jews. In other words, something impossible.
Hate to rain on your parade, but there are certain facts of life. Death. Taxes. Palestinians want to destroy Israel. That’s it.
For those of us not in the know of every jot and tittle of Israeli and Palistinian territory, it becomes impossible to make sense of the article to begin with.
If anyone has a concise few sentences of what is being talked about here, hope to hear from you. A simple map would be helpful, if anyone is familiar with the above subject.
