Just got back from seeing Atlas Shrugs in MN

Posted on 04/17/2011 2:48:13 PM PDT by macquire

Only movie I have been to in my life in which the audience clapped and cheered at the end!

1:30 PM show with about a 1/3 full theater. Pretty good I figure for an afternoon movie in MN.

My son and his gf said it was awful, like it was made (and misunderstood) by liberals, and the characters were trite.

But I have not seen it.

One of my favorite all time movies. I have the deluxe or whatever version DVD around here.

Ever watch Brisco County Jr. or Jack Of All Trades?

They were right. It was painful to watch. Too many characters, too many bad actors, ridiculous scenes, and so on. I apologized to my date afterward. Unfortunately I bought into what others here were saying about it. Honestly, this was the worst movie I’ve seen in years.

It’s in just 300 theaters nationwide. If you want to find out where it is showing near you, here is the Box Office Mojo link:

http://www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=atlasshrugged.htm

In the middle of the screen, select the “showtimes” tab, then enter your zip code, and it will list the theaters near you and the show times.

BOM is good for seeing how well movies are doing in the theater.

In this case, it’s also funny to check out the reviews at Rotten Tomatoes:

http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/atlas_shrugged_part_i/

Because only 9% of critics liked the movie, but 85% of viewers liked it.

Furthermore, there wasn’t that much truly conservative about it. It was almost impossible to detect any political polarity between the players. They were all greedy or corrupt. Even the supposed good guys were jerks. The unnecessary adulterious love scene made me squirm.

No one clapped here in Delafield, WI. We sat in silence, dumbfounded at the wasted time and money we had just spent on such lackluster entertainment.

Question: when Atlas shrugged, did you grimace?

Watched it in Wilmington, NC at 2:10pm today. Probably 50-60 people. Mostly 50 and older. Plenty of clapping at the end.

Having just read the book about a month ago I wondered how well someone who hasn’t read the book enjoyed the movie.

I think they did a great job of bridging the gap between the railroad era of the book and the technology era we are in. Beautifully done.

Going tomorrow; or Tuesday. . .read Ayn Rand's books; and cannot wait to see the current film unfolding. Am wondering if PTO organizations cannot get this into a 'school viewing' (high school). Or even a recommended or required reading per class work. (There are Libs who think they are the protagonists in this story/lol...) They could try; just the effort, would give film more attention.

(How about those 'open air' screenings, many communities share. Shout out here to Greenville, S.C.! (No. . .do not live there - but do visit/lol.)

I saw the movie today and enjoyed very much. I wish it was 6 hours long featuring all the parts. The people who don’t enjoy this movie would maybe prefer Scream 4 (like we need another scream movie). The audience clapped loudly at my theater too.

We clapped here too, and even some out right laughs!

I thought all things considered, it was a pretty good movie.
My hubby hadn’t read the book, but I did, some time ago. I thought the “dark man” showing up here and there was more than I remembered from the book, but in a movie this element would need to be reinforced.

I was glad we went to see it.

To me it was an anti-Hollywood movie. It was truly refreshing to watch a movie where I didn’t know any the actors and the movie didn’t have to rely on the typical effects and such. I can’t wait for the others.
