New Study: Brains of Right Wingers May Actually be Less Highly Evolved! (Projectile Vomit Alert)

According to a recent study out of Virginia Tech, a team of scientists have found that the way a person responds to disgusting images can reveal their political leanings.

Maggots, rotting carcasses, gross gunk in the kitchen sink – all these were used in the research, and the results were pretty astonishing.

“Disgusting images generate neural responses that are highly predictive of political orientation even when those neural responses don’t correspond with an individual’s conscious reaction to the images,” said Read Montague, a Virginia Tech Carilion Research Institute professor who led the study. “Remarkably, we found that the brain’s response to a single disgusting image was enough to predict an individual’s political ideology.”

Participants in the study were shown images such as filthy toilets and rotting animal carcasses, mixed with both neutral and pleasant images like beautiful landscapes and babies.

After viewing the images, the subjects took part in a political ideology questionnaire, asking about how often they discuss politics and how they felt about topics such as church-state separation and gay marriage.

“Standard Goebbels propaganda: Demonize your opponent instead of debating with them”

It really is Goebbels-like.

fMRI is fine technology, but how these political scientists and neuroscientists use it for such studies is pseudoscience.

I’ve thought for a while now that they think they will be able to use it to prove thought crimes.

And this is Goebbels-like dehumanization.

Hey, it’s all scientific.

To put it in stark terms, they are surplus individuals who can only exist in good times. They don’t last during bad times. Or as I said, they may have to latch onto somebody who can shelter them from harsh reality which could wipe them out.

They are not more evolved at all. They are the product of devolution caused by prolonged prosperity.

My thoughts exactly! But you said it so well I’m just seconding you. :)

Yeah real scientific method you have there. Likewise I can put a montage of photos showing pictures of people doing hard work, going to church, Jesus, guns, the Constitution, etc...and predict your ideology just the same by your reaction...

Excellent!

Researchers at the University of Nebraska conducted a similar experiment in which they: “showed liberals and conservatives pleasant (cute rabbit, beach ball) and unpleasant (crashed car, person getting beaten) pictures and followed their eye movements. Conservatives tended to spend more time focusing on the negative images and became more physiologically aroused by them, while liberals focused on the more positive images. The researchers suggest that this is in line with conservative and liberal politics whereby conservatives are focused on protection from threats, and liberals focus on a positive future.”

A more logical suggestion is that liberals ignore unpleasant realities and live in a utopian dream world. But we didn't need a study to tell us that.

The Soviets disparaged anyone who disagreed with them as mentally ill or deficient, too. They called it “philosophical intoxication.” Of course, there were very serious consequences that accompanied the diagnoses.

Well, if this is all true, then conservatives deserve to be the next protected class. How dare you make a movie filled with messages insulting my under-evolved brain?

In the body of the text there is no proof of the titles assertion

I agree: however, there is proof of the bias of the "researchers":

The researchers suggest that this is in line with conservative and liberal politics whereby conservatives are focused on protection from threats, and liberals focus on a positive future.

From a nuclear apocalypse to the population bomb to global warming, liberals have been focused on an extremely negative vision of the future for my entire life.

Ah......the. Peter Principal applies to intellect as well.

Deep collectivist thinkers have rendered themselves fit for no purpose. ..except collapsing civilization....and exterminating mildly cognizant DOERS OF MUTUALLY BENEFICIAL WORK.

Hold m’ beer.

Who Really Care? answered this years ago. Not only are conservatives far more charitable with contributions and volunteer time, they even donate more blood. In Europe, where the social democratic model is well entrenched, charity is virtually unknown.

The takeaway message for Election Day? “Think, don’t just react,” Montague said. “But no one needs neuroscience to know that’s a good idea.”

It amazes me that a scientific study has a "take away message for Election Day" and that message is "think, don't just react." Gee. Since those primitive conservatives are the ones who just "react", I wonder what the message really is.

I can understand that.

We don't have to maintain all the lies of Liberalism (and that takes a huge amount of work and brain space)...therefore our brains are simple, clear, and clean.

I bet most of the money was spent on beer.

More likely something that would elicit the response: "Oh, Wow, maannnnn." than "Da-yum, Bubba!"

The darwinian concept of survival of the fittest must be considered. The fact that there is change to the brain of liberals doesn’t mean the change is actually beneficial to the species

And many FReepers would say “What’s a Facebook? “. My kids convinced me that I needed a page. I got one and joined my HS reunion group. I haven’t looked at the thing in at least six months, if not longer.

Isn’t it true, according to evolutionists, that evolutionary change often leads down a dead end path? Methinks, that will be the plight of the libtards.
