Businessman Donald Trump surged into the lead for the 2016 Republican presidential nomination, with almost twice the support of his closest rival, just as he ignited a new controversy after making disparaging remarks about Sen. John McCains Vietnam War service, according to a new Washington Post-ABC News poll.
Support for Trump fell sharply on the one night that voters were surveyed following those comments. Telephone interviewing for the poll began Thursday, and most calls were completed before the news about the remarks was widely reported.
Although the sample size for the final day was small, the decline was statistically significant. Still, it is difficult to predict what could happen to Trumps support in the coming days and weeks as the controversy plays out.

It's name ID; the little voters are too uninformed to make a good choice.
Well hold onto your Red Bull because your worst nightmare just came true.
Bill OReilly just helped Trump cross the bridge to redemption about 10 minutes ago and I think this little dust up is over and Trump can move on. Sorry to be bearer of bad news. :-)
“He was awarded the Legion of Merit, the Silver Star and the Distinguished Flying Cross”.
The Distinguished Flying Cross was given to him for being shot down in battle. The Silver Star was given him for being beaten by his captors. For resisting “extreme mental and physical cruelties” inflicted upon him by his captors. Any tortured POW would have been given the same medal.
I never said the McCain thing was bigger than anything else. But O'Reill, Fox, and the media can push their guy all they want. Trump will pull out eventually and conservatives will be damaged.
Well I see you are semi shocked by this sudden turn of events. But look at the bright side. Tomorrow you will still be able to provide the comic relief on the Trump threads. :-)
Can’t say i care what he said about John McCain, I think most of us know far worse could be said about that back stabbing democrat in republican clothing.
Was John McCain a war hero? I think that is really like giving a medal for showing up. Maybe that’s popular among some parents and schools today but its not terribly honest nor is it teaching kids that vital lesion that in life honor and greatness must be earned and only those few who work the hardest and are the most successful can get it.
Like wise Hero should be reserved for those who display uncommon heroics. Just showing up is not enough.
If we can believe wikipedia, Donald Trump’s father Fred Trump died in 1999 leaving behind a $300 million estate to his 5 children. How much made it Donald’s way is anybody’s guess, but by 1999 Donald Trump was already well established.
None of Fred Trump’s real estate holdings were in Manhattan, that was a move that Donald Trump made.
Like Bill Gates, Donald Trump was born to wealth. But plenty of trust fund babies have dissipated the fortunes that they were born into. For what it’s worth these two managed to increase their fortunes, proving that at least they have some business skills.
I’m not shocked at all. I never thought O’Reilly would tear into his liberal New York buddy.
If you’re a Rick Santorum kind of guy, your interests must be in sweater vests and lame political signage. That’s all he ever was and ever will be.
The sample was less than 200 people and conservatives generally do poorly on Sundays for some reason, maybe church attendance.
LOL! Your “screenshots” of a very sad Tokyo Rove are hilarious.
Trump's father maybe left him a fortune of 300 million, maybe worth a billion or more in today's money.
Trump says he is worth 10 billion. Forbes traditionally puts him at 4 billion, but unsure of what metric they use.
That's making good on the money you've got, I say.
Yep. Doesn’t much matter how well he follows X beliefs if he has no chance to be elected. Or if conservatives get in a snit and don’t vote on the day...that’s how Obama got there. No Republican candidate was good enough for them. I think dickwad was worse, but some don’t see it that way.
McCain got the nomination with just 33% of the popular vote in the primaries. Bush is counting on something similar happening in 2016.
It’s not about you.
Mr. Bush? He has never hinted that abortion is over. But abortion will never be abolished whoever is president. Don't delude yourself.
If Cruz is elected - nothing - nothing is going to change concerning abortion. He may make a speech on the Roe v. Wade anniversary, but that is it.
Trump will do himself in, don’t worry. In the meantime, try to enjoy the ride.
Will be interesting to see how The Donald comes out of this - interesting because you know he'll not issue a whiny apology. For that reason alone, I can't help but cheer him on.
In the end, though, I think we get Walker or Cruz.
no, there will never be an election where the two candidates are communists.
that foolish attempt to rationalize your delusion is fallacious.
your sanctimony is neglect of your duty to make a difficult choice and support America with your vote
