The California-based tech giant unlocked dozens of iPhones at federal investigators’ requests between 2008 and 2015, a prosecutor argued last year.

“That is not readily apparent from my understanding of what Apple has been asked to do. From my understanding, it is serial number specific,”

Once Apple does it for this specific phone, LEO can send any number of specific phones with a warrant specific to the sn of the phone to have Apple defeat the incident/time restrictions. There will be a precedent.

Going back to 2008? So you’re including all the old OS’s that didn’t have the newer encryption and security features.

The gullible will still slop this up though I bet.

Unless you can point to a case in which Apple did the exact same thing that the FBI is requesting now, you can’t draw a valid parallel.

They provided all the information. The warrant commands Apple to develop a brand new operating system, which does not currently exist.

GOD! Stop repeating this!!!!!!!!

It does NOT require Apple to develop a brand new operating system. More like it requires them to go to their code, and change a memory location with the Number "10" to "-1" or something.

It requires making a miniscule change to the part that detects number of attempts to enter the password.

It is a huge NOTHING.

It would probably take one of their coding experts about 15 minutes to do it.

Nothing in the constitution says you have to invent it, and produce it just because FedGov demands it.

Changing a couple of numbers in already written code can hardly be considered as "inventing" it.

Or they could copy the new iOS which they are demanding that Apple write (which bypasses the security features), and install on the San Bernadino iPhone. As evidence in a murder and a terrorist attack, Apple can not keep the phone.

Once FBI has the new iOS, they can install it on any future device to crack them in-house. Other agencies of the government would likely share that capability.

Using these court orders they can crack ANY Apple phone.

If they are doing it under court order, then I do not give a Sh*t.

We rely on the courts to provide 4th and 5th amendment protection for criminal defendants. If the court determines it to be lawfully necessary, then I have to accept that this is how our laws work.

Search Warrants are valid when signed by a judge.

“Specific warrant issued for information, duly served and we are on the trail of mass murderers. Apple is blocking us from the information.”

Apple doesn’t have the information. We’re serving a warrant to the wrong party, probably because the correct party to be serving is dead already.

told by the FBI, every safe you make must have a key that you must give to us.

Off topic but close, and a fun read are the stories about Richard Feynman, the safecracker!

The exact details of what they did before and what the FBI wants them to do now are likely two rather different things.

Not so far as I have been able to determine up to this point. Apple can technically do this with very little effort. They simply refuse to do this.

then demand that their code team sit down and code one up toot sweet or else!

Which will take them about 15 minutes.

Apple is stopping them. They said so. They will not open the information on the phone. It is their software in the phone. They built it. Sorry, but facts are facts.

The fact is, Apple built the phone in such a way as to lock everybody out, including themselves. If it turns out they can comply with the court's order, then they have a bug! Their product will have malfunctioned!

Here's a quote from "Danny," who appears to know what he's writing about:

The only way I can possibly see to potentially unlock the phone without the unlock code is to use an electron microscope to read the encryption key from the secure enclave's own storage. This would take considerable time and expense (likely millions of dollars and several months) to accomplish. This also assumes that the secure enclave chip itself isn't built to be resistant to this kind of attack. The chip could be physically designed such that the very act of exposing the silicon to read it with an electron microscope could itself be destructive.

Imagine you are just a good ole Christian Conservative...

That's what I keep thinking. Somehow I suspect that most of the people demanding Apple comply with the FBI here would be singing quite a different tune if it was Lavoy Finnicum's phone.

“If they are doing it under court order, then I do not give a Sh*t.”

“Search Warrants are valid when signed by a judge”

We have the precedent of the FISA Court issuing blanket search warrants, which covered the entire population, one 90 day period after another.

What is your assessment of how easy it would be based on?

Pull out the memory chips and read them.

What type of memory chip are they?
It's not like the data is etched in the chip?

“Here’s a quote from “Danny,” who appears to know what he’s writing about”

Oh, well Danny says so, screw the Constitution and the Governments abillity to chase down a mass murderer. The judges order was for the information on THIS phone. 30 days before killing 14 people, the killer stopped his cloud storage and started using this little baby. Now we would like to see what was so important to encrypt, who he was talking to and what other mass murderers may be tracked down by accessing THIS phone. According to the law, we should be able to do that.Let “Danny” explain why we can’t expect every citizens’s help to catch these killers?

I’m guessing this not the whole story. I’m guessing the 0 admin is making a play on Apple to divulge or allow the government into trade secrets in order for the government to crack into any Apple phones.

Okay, to clarify for you, this "Back door" would take them 15 minutes. It is a big nothing.

Second point. That this would be used "over and over" again to unlock Iphones, is true, but misleading.

Yes, every time Apple got a court order instructing them to unlock an IPhone, another IPhone would get unlocked.

They are misleadingly implying that the tool will be released to the FBI, and that the FBI would then willy nilly unlock everyone's IPhones without a court order.

In my opinion, this is deliberate deceit from the Apple corporation in an effort to stampede the public into believing that their rights are being threatened.

So far as I can tell, this current order applies to this particular phone, and is issued by a Federal Judge with a valid writ.

Should another Federal judge issue another writ, then yes, Apple might have to do this again, as many times as a court order demands it.

But the protection of our rights lie with the Court. We must presume that they are staying within the legal bounds defined by our laws and constitution, because we really have no other choice.

Unless you are going to argue that the system has broken down, and that the Federal Judiciary has become so corrupt that they cannot be trusted to protect our rights, then you don't have a valid point in allowing Apple to shirk this order.

What I find ironic is that Apple inc, among other silicon valley corporations, has been heavily responsible in assisting the rise to power of exactly the sort of Fascist governance that everyone claims to fear.

People like Barack Obama.

Or the government is trying to bully Apple in the Court of Public Opinion to allow them a backdoor into all Apple phones, although they already have all the information they need.

You do know that the "deal" is to let Apple keep the phone and all modified software? You do know that the government is not asking for the ability to crack all Iphones?

If the government does not have the "back door" and Apple does, then how is the government going to abuse this "back door"?

Isn't the Judiciary the administrators of law around here? Since when did Apple get so big that they think they are above the law?
