Two powerful earthquakes have struck near the southern Japanese city of Kumamoto, a day after a tremor there killed at least nine people.

The quakes - a magnitude 7.1 (4.4 miles) at a depth of 7km and a 7.4 at a depth of 40km (25 miles) - came in quick succession, officials said.

Reuters confirming. Also reporting another quake magnitude 7.4 with a depth 40 km close to the 7.1 quake.

Pager (USGS’s damage estimation alert system) puts nearly a million people in the severe shaking range. And it wasn’t very deep either (just 10km)

I think so as well; USGS is usually quite on top of multiple quakes happening within quick succession, and more so, they are rarely conservative in their magnitude until well after the fact.

I wonder why only one event is listed, and of a lesser magnitude with their PAGER system showing severe damage?

Absolutely, and truely expect this to reverberate around the ring of fire.
Based on my earthquake in Hawaii two weeks ago I think my CA has a good chance of an earthquake. Plus we have that strange weather going I’ve seen before some other earthquakes.

Makes me nervous about the Cascadia Subduction Zone. Sucker hasn’t had a major movement in a couple centuries. We’re about due.

That 7.1 magnitude quake only 6.2 miles below the surface will cause substantial damage to the city of Kumamoto itself. That close to the surface and even with Japan's strict seismic safety codes, the casualty toll is going to be quite high. :-(

How close was this to Tokyo?

Nowhere near it. The tsunami warnings are right next to Nagasaki, on the west side of Kyushu island.
