Three D animated reconstruction of Pompei
Ancient Origens ^ | 10/11/2016 | Natalia Klimczak

Pompeii was an ancient Roman city near modern-day Naples in Italy, which was wiped out and buried under 6 meters of ash and pumice following the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD. It is an eerie feeling to walk the empty streets of Pompeii and to view shops and homes left virtually untouched for nearly two millennia. One home still contains a complete loaf of bread sitting in the oven, perfectly preserved by a coating of ash. Now everyone has the opportunity to walk the streets and peer inside homes thanks to a detailed 3D digital reconstruction of an entire Pompeian city-block.

There is a great book if fiction about Pompeii that I always recommend to anyone interested in Pompeii. It is written from the point of view of the city official in charge of the water aqueduct—which goes out of order due to quakes prior to the eruption. It is so very interesting about the Roman aqueducts construction and engineering and everyday life while a conflagration is brewing in Vesuvius.

Pompeii, by Robert Harris is very off-price reasonable on line now at several locations.

We’re staying in Sorrento, and plan to see the whole of the Amalfi Coast and Capri.

You must go to eat at Zi'ntonio (www.zintonio.it) off the main square in Sorrento. Don't go the first night because you won't go anywhere else after that. The people there are good friends of mine. The wife and I were married in Sorrento and they took care of everything for us. It's been about 5 years since we've been last, but talk to Thomas if he's still around and he'll be able to hook you up with nearly anything you need.

When you go to Capri, get the earliest ferry from Sorrento Marina Grande because you'll need the entire day to see the island.

Especially when you see how “small” Mount St. Helens was.

Nice graphic. I’ve climbed Lassen a couple times. Mount Tehama was next door and 1,000 feet higher than Lassen Peak. It’s almost completely gone now after an eruption 50x Mt. St. Helens and erosion.

Rent a car. Be adventurous. By the way, I envy you. I always wanted to go there since I first read about it as a kid. They had an excellent traveling exhibit on the museum circuit a few years ago with relics, replicas of wall frescos, etc. that I saw in Houston.

Did you notice the part in this article where it said some of the windows still had their original glass in them after all these years. Now that’s amazing.

Been lots of stuff about Pompeii on various cable TV outlets, one of them on today called Pompeii, the Dead Speak.
