As Schwarzenegger Eyes U.S. Senate, Remember That He Was a Pretty Unpopular Governor
New York Magazine ^ | March 10, 2017 | Adam K. Raymond

Posted on 03/10/2017 12:04:09 PM PST by nickcarraway

In The Running Man, a 1987 dystopian action flick set in 2017, Arnold Schwarzenegger’s character goes to great lengths to punish a power-drunk reality-TV host for his manipulation of the American people. The real Schwarzenegger is considering doing something similar in 2018, when he might run for the U.S. Senate so he could be a thorn in President Trump’s fleshy side.

Politico reports that the former California governor is eyeing the Senate seat currently occupied by Dianne Feinstein, who will be 85 next year, when she’s up for reelection. It’s unclear whether Schwarzenegger’s potential run would be with the GOP or as an independent, but what is clear is that he would be anti-Trump.

Unlike those in the GOP who aligned against Trump in the Republican primaries only to slink over to his side in the general election, Schwarzenegger remained steadfastly against him. A month before the election, Schwarzenegger put out a statement saying that he would not vote for the Republican in a presidential race for the first time since becoming a citizen.

But as proud as I am to label myself a Republican, there is one label that I hold above all else — American. So I want to take a moment today to remind my fellow Republicans that it is not only acceptable to choose your country over your party — it is your duty.

Asked about Schwarzenegger’s 2018 plans by Politico, his spokesperson didn’t deny that the former Governator may try to become a Senatator. “Right now Gov. Schwarzenegger’s focus is on using his platform to bring some sensibility and coherency to Washington by fighting for redistricting reform, like we did in California,’’ Daniel Ketchell told Politico. “We are keeping all of our options open as far as how we can accomplish that.”

While Politico quotes one expert who believes Schwarzenegger would “become an instant player” should he run for office, it’s worth remembering that he left Sacramento in early 2011 with a 23 percent approval rating and a $28 billion budget shortfall. The economy was to blame for some of his unpopularity, but so too were his efforts to balance the budget by cutting spending on programs that helped the state’s most vulnerable populations. He was so unpopular by the time his term was ending that current governor Jerry Brown was able to sink his opponent, former eBay CEO Meg Whitman, by suggesting that she was the second coming of Schwarzenegger.

On top of his political shortcomings, Schwarzenegger is also an oft-accused groper who fathered a child with a household worker. Trump may have proved that sexual impropriety isn’t the impediment to higher office that it once was, but it sure seems like California could do better.

Good. I urge Schitzzener to run for the Senate. I will enjoy watching the Democrats tear him apart limb by limb. The TV commercials about the maid he was boinking and with whom he sired his spitting image will be good. Bring on the clowns.

I was a child in California when Ronald Reagan was governor. It was a veritable paradise.

He talked a good game at the onset. But he was a useless politician. His big game to fame was the recall election to remove Grey Davis.

Still love his movies.

He FAILED as Governor of Calif.

He FAILED as Trump's replacement on the Apprentice.

He's too old to be an action movie star.

He screwed the maid 4 years ago and now has an illegitimate child.

He failed to attend his 17 year old illegitimate son's high school graduation.

Now, he's going to run for the Senate?

What a TOTAL A$$HOLE.

He wasn’t. We had the Doles, the Snows, the McCains...

He was a lousy governor. He did a number of things I wish he hadn’t, and very little I had wanted him to.

Was that better than the Left would have done? Undoubtedly.

He was essentially George Bush in California.

We must never forget that Mister Schwarzenegger essentially pardoned a gang member (IIRC) convicted of murder.

This particular gang member happens to be (again, IIRC) the son of then Democrat Cali House speaker Nunez.

There was no rational reason to let the murdering gangster out of jail.

This unforgivable, conspicuously corrupt "middle finger" to California law, public safety, and public trust must and will follow Mister Schwarzenegger forever.

In his own screen dialog, "hasta la vista" (politically speaking).

I’d prolly vote for him just for the entertainment value.

No way that we’d be able to pull off anything resembling conservative in California. Might as well have a giggle from it.

This clown must be suffering from a severe psychotic disorder, I doubt he could get elected as Dog Sitter in Santa Monica.

I live in California and refuse to vote for him because he is an elitist that only cares about those within his own social class. before leaving office he pardoned a unrepentant murder and when asked why his answer was that he is the son of a close family friend as if that was a good enough reason. he is a democrat masquerading as a republican.

Schwarzenegger was a terrible governor and will make an equally terrible senator. He also doesn't have a prayer of winning as even the squishiest Republican he is. Not against several high profile Dems in a state he helped turn so far Left it no longer has a right side.

California was my home for 40 years before I moved to NC two years ago. I will always love the state, but the politicians there have ruined it so bad I think it will never recover.

My teachers were dedicated to teaching. Very little crime. Women were feminine and men weren’t. Nearly every home had a mother and father. New homes in the $18,000 range.

“The Running Man” was an amusing movie — even with the Bolshevik allusion at the beginning of the movie; i.e., Schwarzenegger refuses to fire upon food rioters as what happened in 1917 with the Czar’s gendarmes and food rioters then). “The Running Man” movie was produced by either “Starsky” or “Hutch” and the person directing it had Communist parents.

As much as we all would like for there to be a Conservative Senator from CA...If the choice is going to be between dianne feinstein or kamala harris and arnold schwarzenegger the choice should be clear.

It seems to me Ahnold is preempting a bid by a real conservative -- or at least someone conservative enough to win in CA. The RINOnator is counting on exactly the scenario you suggest. He plans to suck up money and support early.

Schwarzenegger actually DID what Billy Bush and Trump were fooling around about on that tape. He is also an anti-gun left-wing, pro-illegal alien loooooooooser.

I wouldn’t vote for this POS for dogcatcher.

He is as good as we can get. If he’s lucky enough to win perhaps he will do a profile in courage or 2 when it comes to tax relief.

The same way Trump is folding now and giving up HIS power to the LYIN RYAN??? Once Trump gives this power to LYIN RYAN he will find that his WHOLE agenda will be only a VERY SMALL portion of what he truly wanted such as tax cuts!!!
