Max, age 13, is agender — neither male nor female. When referring to Max, you don't use "he" or "she;" you use "they."
Once strictly a pronoun of the plural variety, "they" is now doing double duty as singular, too — referring to individuals, like Max, who do not see gender as an either/or option. (NPR agreed not to use Max's last name, because the family feared the sort of online threats that have been made to other transgender families.)
If the whole he/she pronoun thing feels awkward to you, Max is sympathetic — and patient.

The middle ground should be some perspective where gender issues are not the only reason to keep living. Are there not more important things to do, to occupy one’s mind with than insular, myopic contemplation of rhetorical questions? There should be for better balance.

Yesterday there were two hugely fat women in front of me at Panera. When they turned one of them had a scruffy beard and mustache. Her breasts had apparently been shaved as she had less than an actual male who was 150 plus pounds overweight would present. Both women looked to be 150 pounds overweight. The sight gave me an unpleasant feeling.
The suicide rate among people who mutilate themselves is very high. People make irreversible body changes thinking that will fix whatever is wrong in their lives only to discover the unhappiness is something deeper and, to them, unexpected.

Why does our society feel compelled to turn everything upside down, because a tiny fraction of a percent who have issues with social norms such as male and female???
I call horseshit on this.
Now there have been attempts to change the meaning by "feminist theory" and crap, but common people have not used the word that way until in the last few years there is an all out blitz of this revisionist usage which has intimidated some common people to question if they had used the word wrong. They have not.
Now if they say: "Hey we should change the definition of gender, who is with us?" that is one thing. But instead they go around lying about the history of the word saying it had always meant something different so they can call people that don't accept their agenda serving made-up variation incorrect. Sorry, I am not playing. I don't appreciate changing language to suit agendas, and I don't appreciate dishonesty.
I believe I can help. Max - go to the bathroom and pull down your pants & underwear. Do you have dangly parts there or tucked in parts? There’s your clue - dangly = he, tucked in = she. Follow-up with a chromosome confirmation. My bill will be on the way tomorrow.
People who promote and support this should be charged with child abuse. Period.
Here we go, just like the sodomites. “We just want to do our thing, we don’t want to put anyone out”. In fairly short order, it escalated, with the sodomites, to “If you don’t positively celebrate all of our perversion, you’re a pariah from the rest of society and we will make your life hell”. Only I imagine that the timeline is shortened now, because everyone knows it’s a given that in due course, every perversion will be forcibly acclaimed.
