Goodell's contract held up by anthem protests: report
The Hill ^ | 10/22/17 | Jacqueline Thomsen

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell’s contract extension has been delayed while the league addresses player protests during the national anthem, ESPN reported Sunday.

Goodell’s contract extension was expected to have been completed by now, but the league has instead been focusing on responding to the ongoing controversy surrounding players kneeling during the anthem.

Only 20 minutes of last week’s owners meeting was spent discussing Goodell’s contract, during which the deal was initially expected to be completed, according to ESPN.

Goodell presented a proposal to NFL owners at the meeting last week that included ways to amplify players’ work on social issues.

The commissioner had earlier said that he thought everyone should stand for the national anthem, but said after the meeting last week that the league would not require players to stand.

The protesting players were thrust into the spotlight after Trump began attacking players who kneel during the anthem last month. NFL free agent Colin Kaepernick began kneeling during the anthem last season to protest racial injustice.

Hmmm. I thought Kaepernick started the kneeling over police brutality. Or something. So many different versions out there, it's tough to keep straight anymore.

Goodell should have his contract cut by the amount of decreased attendance and reduced TV viewership. He should owe money. That would be good.

Go to Hell, NFL, and take Goodell.

Does anyone know what usually happens to a CEO when the corporation suffers double digit losses directly because of the decisions of that 40 million dollar CEO?

Do they normally get their contracts renewed?

“Look, revenues have contracted over 25% since our peak. It is very unfair to hold me accountable for not taking decisive action at the beginning of these protests. All of you now know nothing can or will be done. So let’s just move on and limit my raise to 20% and the signing bonus to $10 million. I’ll be happy to agree to a 10 year guaranteed extension at $26 million per year.”
Guarantee a statement very close to that was made by Goodel to the owners and the owners did not protest.

No. Inappropriately, they get lush exit packages.

“... kneeling during the anthem last season to protest racial injustice”

The racial injustice is so bad in this country that the NFL (subsidized by American taxpayers) employs thousands of black men to play a sport they love, and pay them millions of dollars every year to perform and entertain on a stage they could never do anywhere else.

I wish I could get that kind of racial injustice.

First, fire Goodell.

Then convince Mike Ditka to come out of retirement for a year as interim commissioner. Iron Mike is getting up in years but he still takes no guff from anyone. He’s a hero to millions, even those who weren’t die-hard Bears fans.

Long term ... only a complete change in the ethnic makeup of the NFL will heal the running sores of this season.

Hard to imagine any any successor doing anything different. I think it’s more likely they will stop playing the national anthem at football games, regardless of who the commissioner is.

I am afraid you will never see that—and we can thank all of the colleges and their scholarships to these so-called scholar-athletes.

Maybe Roger’s wife can create another fake Twitter account to help him.

I think your comment is accurate, FRiend, although I still stand by mine.

Even here on Free Republic, I am a bit intimidated over expressing what I really think about the attitudes and antics of a particular ethnic group.

Baseball right now seems to be doing a much better job at bringing people of different ethnic backgrounds together in pursuit of sporting excellence — and big $$$. The Latino and Asian players mostly seem to be happy to be there, and there’s certainly nothing wrong with that.

This is going to be a great World Series coming up, whoever wins. I can’t help but wonder if fate is going to smile on the Astros, especially in view of how much that city has suffered from the recent hurricane.

Recall that the year Drew Brees and the Saints won the Super Bowl was, I believe, just after Hurricane Katrina. There was a fair amount of media comment at the time that the championship was a great source of civic pride for residents of devastated New Orleans.

I’m willing to accept that — although there’s no way I will be taking my next vacation there, as I value my life too much.

Replacing Goddell might be the only way for the NFL to bounce back, so long as his replacement actually has real executive experience.

It isn’t Pete Rozelle’s NFL anymore, when football was fun. At least those dust ups between him and Joe Namath were entertaining.

I’m not,I have a son that is a cop and 2014-2015 changed me forever.

That said, enjoy the World Series-—the Red sox dropped the ball but the Pats just won. ( I have NEVER watched any type of football game, but keep up with the scores.)

Goodell has unintentionally done more to illustrate what is wrong with our celebrity-obsessed, value-signalling, left-biased sports and media culture than could have happened any other way. I don’t know whether to hope he falls on his sword and takes the hit or doubles-down on his present course that will lead to further destruction

He's doing a horrible, terrible job and the NFL is crashing and burning.

Well, somebody hold my beer while I extend his contract.
