Maybe someone will point out that a computer program cannot possibly have the same ability to perceive and judge as a human. Yes, humans are fallible and cause accidents all the time but can distinguish between a human and a shadow. A computer program does not perceive. It calculates. Human perception is superior to that of a computer program with a camera lens.

> My bet is that the car followed the traffic laws and this woman was jay walking or walking against the light.

Since humans don't always do what they are told, its time to ban them from the roads !

Tempe police say the self-driving Uber was in autonomous mode at the time of the collision and there was a vehicle operator behind the wheel.

So, maybe the human being had a heart and pulled over to inspect the speed bump....

Well - part of testing anything usually involves monitoring and describing the failures so they can correct them later. I’m trying to figure out why they are test driving them on public roads.

“Hey - Al - how’s the testing on that new heart medicine coming along?”

“Pretty good - although the New York Daily news said someone died from it yesterday. But that’s not too bad considering how many we’ve sold.”

Jay walking can be fatal

I've never seen jaywalking like I've seen driving in the 'hood.

Growing up, "jaywalking" was waiting until traffic was clear and then crossing at a crosswalk while the "no crossing" light was flashing.

And then there's jaywalking in the 'hood, which is roughly defined as walking out in the middle of busy streets typically 100 feet away from a proper crosswalk because you just don't give a f***, walking down the middle of busy streets, walking out in front of cars doing 50 mph forcing them to slam on their brakes (and you'd better because if you hit a jaywalker in the 'hood, 50 people will jump out of the shadows, pull you from your vehicle, and beat you to death).

In the 'hood, jaywalking is a sport!

I am flabbergasted they are allowing these on streets anywhere. Who paid off whom to make this possible???

The W$billion dollar settlement is what will kill autonomous cars. The deep pockets are the software developers and car companies - not individuals.

You serious that the first murder by a driverless car is not Breaking News or Top News?! It doesn't involve Trump yet, but I'm sure they will find a way to blame him for it by the end of the day.

This is big news. It could kill driverless cars (should in the near term), it raises questions questions about liability, and so much more.

Alas, no Trump.

Yep...there is a critical flaw in how their system works.
I suspect the sensors had trouble resolving the bicycle operating in a direction it didn’t expect.

Considering how bicyclists operate in SF, Portland and Seattle...with zero regard for traffic laws, many more are going to get killed.

I nearly killed one in Portland when they blew right thru a Red Light and they didn’t even bother to see if a car was coming.

Eventually I just got used to watching for Kamikaze bicyclists in Portland.

I bought "Christine" for my daughter for Christmas. I figured it to be one of those Romantic Novels she was always reading.

Yes...I got the "Who doesn't Know who Stephen King is" award.

How can someone else be at fault when a detection system fails?

How can you say a human would not have properly identified the problem and properly reacted to it?

Don’t you just sense when you see kids down the road playing in their front yard that you need to watch carefully?

I’m waiting for one to hit me. Would no longer dream about hitting a big Power Ball or Mega Millions jackpot. If I didn’t survive, my wife would never have to worry. It would be best if I could still play golf after the incident, though.

My prediction:

The investigation will conclude that the dead pedestrian (or cyclist) was at fault.

Über will be held blameless, and the tests will resume.

” then I don’t have to buy auto insurance. General Motors has to buy auto insurance.”

Great point. It follows what I’ve been saying, the deep pockets are the car companies, not individuals. They will be sued into oblivion after the first school bus crash.

Another “fun” aspect of jaywalking in the hood — the walker can move suddenly and at good speed as they leave the sidewalk and enter the road unexpectedly ... and then ... as they mosey across the street ... being sure to catch your eye ... they move on across ... at a leisurely pace ... and at an obtuse angle ... until they finally ... reach the other sidewalk.

I always figure that these are people who feel they have no power in their daily lives, but as they stop traffic and make everything in the world all about their trip across the street, they feel powerful and awesome.

So, not following the letter of the law is license for the driverless car to kill? I notice the police says walking outside of a crosswalk, not jay walking. What exactly was she doing? And again, is that justifiable defense for a driverless car to kill a human?
