Satellite data backs theory of North Korean nuclear site collapse
Whether underground cave-ins have made the facility unusable is unknown
BY MARIA TEMMING 2:00PM, MAY 10, 2018
A new analysis of satellite images and seismic waves from North Koreas nuclear test site support theories that the underground facility has at least partially collapsed.
Seismologists across the world have been tracking the clandestine nuclear weapons program for years by analyzing vibrations that emanate from explosions at the test site under Mount Mantap (SN: 8/5/17, p. 18). Now, researchers have paired 3-D satellite images of Mount Mantap with seismic tremor data to simulate how the mountains interior might have changed after a hydrogen bomb test on September 3, 2017.
The simulations indicate that the blast which triggered an earthquake of estimated magnitude 6.3 caused a cave-in directly above the detonation site, researchers report online May 10 in Science. The simulations also suggest that a second rock collapse, about 700 meters south of the detonation site, caused a smaller quake about eight minutes after the initial explosion.

It’s upwind of some major heavy industrial centers in China, including some aircraft manufacturing plants (Shenyang, Harbin, and others). Of course Beijing does not like this.
Schumer on N Korea prisoner release:.... Their release should not be exalted it should be expected. It is no great accomplishment of Kim Jong-un to do this. And when the president does it he weakens American foreign policy and puts Americans at risk around the world.
I guess the Chinese should have taken care of Fatboy Kim a long time ago.
It wont be us unless we get some major concessions from China.
Some weeks after the collapse the rumor was that over 200 people had been killed in the collapse - many likely top people in Kim’s nuclear people. If true, then without them Kim has no chance of continuing or restarting his program, thus he had to change his tune as he no longer had a nuclear program
The prevailing winds in that area blow almost parallel to the southern portion of the border with China. The closer an airborne radioactive particles are to the border, the more likely that the winds will carry them into China
Kims nuclear test site collapsed, killing many of his scientists and destroying his nuclear program. Some radiation leaked out and crossed into China. Kim was summoned to Beijing and was told enough is enough, if you want to stay alive stop the rhetoric, stop the testing, make peace. If you do we will support you, let you remain in power, and let your country make lots of money by following our example. If you dont we will get rid of you.
Thats all just speculation, of course.
Ordinary construction crew deaths are of no consequence to Kim. On-site technical crews should have a top scientist or two directing them and inspecting their works in difficult situations - which was likely just prior to the collapse. Loss of one or more of those scientists left a mark.
China’s the man behind the curtain.
