A Japanese newspaper has raised the possibility of Chinese President Xi Jinping also travelling to Singapore when US President Donald Trump meets North Korean leader Kim Jong Un for an unprecedented summit on June 12.
The Mainichi Shimbun's Washington-based correspondent cited American diplomatic sources as saying there was a chance that Mr Xi may meet Mr Trump and Mr Kim in Singapore.
In the report published on Friday (May 11), the Mainichi quoted a senior international negotiator with the National Security Council as telling reporters that "there is a possibility" the leader of a third country may take part
Mr Trump announced via a tweet on Thursday (May 10) that his summit with Mr Kim will be held on June 12 in Singapore.
As of Friday morning, there were no news reports on North Korean media outlets of the date and venue of Mr Kim's meeting with Mr Trump, Japanese broadcaster NHK reported.
When asked at a regular press briefing on the Chinese president's travel plans, a spokesman for the Chinese Foreign Ministry did not answer the question.
In response to a question posed by Japan's Kyodo news agency whether Mr Xi will be visiting Singapore before, after or on June 12, Mr Geng Shuang replied: "We hope that the meeting of the leaders of the DPRK and the United States will achieve positive results."
When asked by South Korea's Yonhap news agency on China's expectations of the high-stakes summit, Mr Geng said that "China welcomes the positive progress made by the leaders of the DPRK and the United States in preparing for the preparations for the summit".

Would be grand if he to be rolled into Singapore in a Trump plane.
Kim has always wanted a one on one with a US President. It's Kim's strategy. Xi's presence would ruin that.
It can be argued that all players should be present.
Complete capitulation of North Korea is being demanded. Xi being there to reinforce the capitulation demand is not a bad thing
This has been a Xi-Trump deal all along.
If it is now in the press that China may participate, it was already decided, probably during Pompeos visit to NK. There was probably a Chinese delegation there as well. Anyone that thinks China could be left out of these negotiations is naive or uninformed.
IMHO China is trying to prevent any slippage of NK into the Western camp.
Xi Jinping(Yogi Bear) heard about a possible Nobel Peace Prize and wants in ,LOL
Your response not only impressively demonstrates your grasp of geopolitics, but also your likely IQ. Thank you.
You clearly have zero understanding of globalist economics and politics.
Please feel free to enlighten me. Unlike some people, Im very open minded to new information. Your insight into why excluding the Chinks as you called them in the negotiations on a country the Chinks actually control would be insightful and could persuade me to adopt your position if it is sufficiently compelling.
President Xi Jinping to Kim:
“Play ball or we use you for spare body parts. I know of someone who needs a new liver and another a kidney.
You’ll do if you catch my drift”
Buy him a season ticket to the Singapore Flyer and let him go spin
China was a party to the Korean War, if they are going to formally end the war as part of the deal.
>China was a party to the Korean War, if they are going to formally end the war as part of the deal.<
True. I’d forgotten that. Though I do remember when China crossed the Yalu River because of MacArthur’s craziness.
I was in the Korean War by the way.
“I was in the Korean War by the way.”
Thank you for your service.
I hope that you get to see a resolution that you can be proud of.
You can already see the difference from space, between those in the South who were saved from Communist dictatorship by the war, and those in the North(little light at night).
The children of the South have grown up with freedom and prosperity, thanks to the sacrifices of that war.
This has been a Xi-Trump deal all along.
And that is not a bad thing.
My guess, if the talks progress, we will see a lessening of tariff talk on China.
IIRC, Trump said that Xi was doing a good job for the Chinese.
And now we have someone that gives a damn about the USA!
I agree. This is high stakes for the Chinese communist regime.
North Korea is China’s only military ally, and basically a vassal state - it could also be a giant vulnerability, if it opened to the West, with its long border.
China is going to try to keep tight control.
China is afraid that North Korea will actually make peace.
Hopefully Kim has realized a truth (However I doubt it.); That to be a great man, he must actually do great things and not just force people to say it.
And he can be a great man, if he frees his people and goes off into retirement. He can prove his wisdom by surrendering.
And I doubt will happen it because of the number of crimes committed by the state over the last 60 years.
There has to be an accounting. There are still people today in the DPRK who have jobs as torturers. Men and women who have a checklist that they look at as they perform their jobs telling them just the right amount of voltage that you can apply to the testicles of an underweight 19 year old man and not damage his heart. And crap like that.
And for any such accounting to take place he would have to admit it did happen and is still happening.
It can’t simply be ignored because recently freed individuals would go hunting for answers and revenge. The South African “Truth Commission” model could be an option. But crimes must be addressed.
I speculated a few years ago that if Kim wanted to have the power to free his country he would have to get absolute and total control. And do do that he would have to be the most brutal and cruel leader ever. Perhaps that is what happened but it does not seem likely.
