The father of two Parkland school shooting survivors was fatally shot at his own North Lauderdale convenience store during a robbery, according to the Broward County Sheriff's Office.
Ayub Ali, a father of four, died Tuesday. Just five months prior, his son and daughter survived the mass shooting that killed 17 and injured 17 others at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School.
According to a BSO report, Lauderdale Lakes BSO deputies and Tamarac Fire Rescue paramedics found the injured 61-year-old store clerk when they arrived at Aunt Molly's Food Store, located at 1691 S. State Road. Ali was transported to Fort Lauderdale's Broward Health Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.
The suspect forced Ali to his store's back office, where he was shot.
"He took money from the cash register and left. The thief returned shortly after and shot Ali," BSO said in a statement. "The suspect wore a black vest, reddish-orange shorts with a black and white stripe on the sides, reddish-orange slides and a skull cap with 'Miami' stitched on the front."
The convenience store reopened Thursday and loyal customers placed a makeshift memorial for Ali, who was born in Bangladesh.
Parkland's Bangladeshi community has stepped up to support Ali's widow and children. On Feb. 14, Ali's daughter was in a classroom in MSD's 1200 building, where the massacre occurred, according to a family friend. One of his sons also was at the school.
"This is the biggest part that hurts me. They have to be without their dad for the rest of their life," Ali's friend Alex Rios told NBC 6.

In my mind, a survivor would be someone directly involved or injured.
Being on the campus in another building does not grant you “survivor” status. That would be like calling someone in the stands for the Super Bowl a Super Bowl participant.

I’d be up there very late at night sometimes. He would tell me some stories. I don’t know what finally spooked him completely off nights but he told directly he would no longer do it.

It only helps if media show the surveillance video of the suspect. NYT is deliberately running a pic of Ayub Ali waiting on a young white customer, who looks decidedly non-violent. NYT does not say the kid in the pic was the killer, but when they report the crime was captured on surveillance video and show a still from surveillance video, they know what many viewers will assume. Unlike the article on FR, NYT did not report the clothing details either. NYT: The Paper of False Record.
Very sad for Ali and his wife and children. America should be better than this.
I’d cool it with the Parkland comments. Even if his children were not directly threatened, they likely lost friend or teachers. They were traumatized if nit by the incident then by the aftermath. They had to face real life at a young age and to then lose their father? Come on.
Obviously those evil guns are at fault.
By the media usage of the term “survivors” anyone anywhere at all who did not get killed in that shooting is a survivor of that shooting.
Any person regardless of ethnicity will be detained if suspected of a criminal act, informed of his or her rights, and given a possible arrest and/or trial later. Blacks are not singled out and a big study at Harvard showed more whites die at the hands of officers than blacks.
If the suspect pulls out a probable weapon or shoves and wrestles with the officer then he puts himself in danger. That is not due to race-—white punks and white meth heads who lunge at cops don’t get gentle questioning, either.
When a cop was in danger recently and justifiably (apparently) had to shoot the suspect, Rev. Jesse Jackson said, another black man killed by cops. A setup for mobs, hatred and riots——but the cop was innocent, apparently.
Last year a police officer hesitated to shoot at a a black criminal menacing her because she said “I didn’t want to become the new headline” like Darren Wilson. She was painfully shot by the criminal and in the hospital.
Next, I used to work with magazines at a university library and one for franchises such as fast food places showed a dead minimum wage female employee on a gurney being loaded into an ambulance, too late to be saved. Her life was cut short by a robber and although she did as she was told he murdered her. Someone’s little girl going to college, someone’s hope for the future lost as their beloved child was suddenly dead.
I learned from the article that once again the most dangerous occupation in the country is for a frontline service worker dealing with the public such as fast food or any counter service. More deaths each year for them than race car drivers, high steel workers,firefighters and police! More danger of dying at work!
It was another chance for them to call everybody who went to the school ‘survivors’. I think Survivors should be limited to people who were actually shot at.
I mean, every day, thousands of drivers apparently “survive” car accidents during their commute, by not actually being at the point on the highway where the accident occurs.
Maybe it’s in the water in Broward County? /sarc

Parkland is a uppity neighbor hood and dont understand why the guy was working at the places unless he owned it but article said he was clerk or something like that.
