Court Mood is Jovial as Kavanaugh Takes His Place on Bench
KSTP-TV ^ | October 9, 2018 | The Associated Press

Brett Kavanaugh took the bench with his new Supreme Court colleagues for the first time Tuesday in a jovial atmosphere that was strikingly at odds with the tension and rancor surrounding his high-court confirmation.

The new justice dived into his new job, asking a handful of questions in the first arguments of the day following a traditional welcome from Chief Justice John Roberts, who wished Kavanaugh "a long and happy career in our common calling."

Kavanaugh took his seat at the end of the bench to Roberts' far left, a visible manifestation of a moment that Republicans have dreamed of for decades, with five solidly conservative justices on the court, and Democrats have dreaded.

His path to confirmation was turbulent — opposition to him intensified after Christine Blasey Ford accused him of sexually assaulting her decades ago, when they were teenagers. Kavanaugh denied it.

In court, Kavanaugh asked questions of both sides in arguments over increased prison sentences for repeat offenders. He jumped in with his first question after most of the other justices had spoken....

Shouldn’t a girl be doing those jobs?

(Hint, hint)

Yup, I'm keeping my fingers crossed for Amy Coney Barrett too.

Kennedy wrote after the last hearing that he thought Kavanaugh shouldn’t be on the court as his “angry” defense of the false charges was too partisan.

That was not Kennedy. That was another former Justice:

Retired Justice John Paul Stevens Says Kavanaugh Is Not Fit for Supreme Court

Anthony Kennedy wrote that Kavanaugh ought to step aside??? I must have missed that. Wow.

I don't think so:

See post 43.

Sorry to everyone for my bad memory! As others have stated - it was Stevens that said he was too “partisan”.

“Anthony Kennedy wrote that Kavanaugh ought to step aside??? I must have missed that. Wow.”

I believe the remark was uttered NOT by Kennedy but rather by that cadaverous bolshevik John Paul Stevens.

Not that tough when you are talking about only nine members of the Supreme Court.

Don’t bother! The 3 of us worked it out but in classic FR style, folks will jump in before reading the thread to learn it’s been resolved. A mistake, a correction- no biggie:) It could go on for awhile, at some point best to ignore.

Do you have a reference for that? I doubt it’s true.

Retired Justice Stevens said something like that.

Kennedy is purported to have suggested to Trump he would retire if someone like Kavanaugh was nominated.

I chuckled when I got to the part about Kavanaugh getting to help oversee the cafeteria. If it was me, I’d WANT that job. :-)

A 5-4 conservative bench is nice, but soon a 6-3 bench will be even nicer . . . and I’m still trying to wrap my head around a 7-2 bench. I mean, heck, the liberal justices might as well not even show up.

Made me grin - they will just manufacture some boilerplate dissenting views to email in....

Are you saying that Justice Kennedy was right to just keep quiet and not defend his law clerk in any way?

He did not have to defend Kavanaugh from the scurrilous charges.
All he had to do was state what kind of law clerk Kavanaugh was. That’s all.
I don’t know how any judge that worked with Kavanaugh would not have praised his demeanor and accomplishments.

But I guess Kennedy was afraid that any positive comments would blackball him from his DC “friends.” The man is an ungrateful coward.

One more thing. Kavanaugh’s first FBI investigation when applying for his first federal job would have been the most telling in regard to his high school and college behavior. That’s when the FBI would have the “freshest” information.

Kennedy knew his law clerk passed that initial FBI investigation. Still said nothing.

You’re right. Just don’t trust John Roberts.

He will turn Anthony Kennedyish. Already has in my book.

“Kennedy is purported to have suggested to Trump he would retire if someone like Kavanaugh was nominated.”

If that was the case, and I don’t disagree with you, then why didn’t Kennedy show more public support for him? He never said anything positive about his once law clerk.
