Pelosi claims win over Trump in State of the Union showdown (CNN fake news barf alert)
CNN (Chicken Noodle News) ^ | January 24, 2019 | Stephen Collinson

Posted on 01/24/2019 4:24:18 AM PST by Zakeet

The House speaker, fortified by brutal polling for Donald Trump, refuses to provide the President an easy way out of his own political box as the government shutdown sparked by his demand for a border wall drags into a 34th day.

In his latest skirmish with Pelosi, Trump effectively admitted defeat late Wednesday and conceded that he would not be able to give his State of the Union address until after the shutdown ends. Earlier in the day, he had publicly thrown down a gauntlet and tried to force the speaker to back down over her refusal to let next Tuesday's showpiece speech take place in the House chamber.

Pelosi's victory came ahead of a pair of Senate votes due to take place on Thursday on dueling Republican and Democratic plans designed to end the shutdown. Neither is likely to break the deadlock, and may simply underline that Trump's hopes of a win remain slim.

The President is trying hard to reshape a political battlefield that is stacked against him, as sources suggest he is increasingly mystified that his tactics have not turned the tables on Democrats. Throughout his life, in business and in politics, Trump has leveraged his domineering personality, flair for showmanship and an unshakable self-belief that often defies the facts of a situation to get his way.

But he is finding in the new political context of divided Washington against an experienced adversary that his force of will and talent for engineering televised spectacles are not moving the political needle.

Apparently she missed the part of the Constitution where the president has the authority to call a joint session of congress, and the Sergeant at Arms can round up, by force if need be, enough congress critters to have a quorum.

I’d pay good money to see Nasty Nazi Nan hauled into a joint session screaming and in irons...

No sarcasm at all. Trump will probably have an easier time working with Nancy Pelosi than with that useless dope Paul Ryan. That’s not sarcasm, either.

I don’t care if he doesn’t give it. I follow what he says and does all the time. I would rather he and the VP stay safe somewhere.

I think this was a mistake by Trump but he’s still 95 percent of his colleagues on the Hill and among the “conservative” punditry. As John Hayward writes in Breitbart this morning: “President Trump spoke out Tuesday against the media assault on the Covington Catholic High School students, leaping into a Culture War melee after many establishment conservatives either backed away from the fight or actively supported the false narrative pushed by left-wing media.” By contrast, National Review, Jonah Goldberg, Hugh Hewitt and many other “conservative” thinkers rushed to embrace the lying left line by throwing as much, if not more, mud at the Covington kids. Unlike Trump, who knows he will never be loved but will be respected by the left, this bunch thinks that if they suck up to them, they might be the last ones to be figuratively eaten by them.

When it happens, Nancy has to sit behind Trump. Smile. Stand at attention when he enters. Pay honor and respect

Ha! See post #75 for a preview of SanFranFreako’s look of “honor and respect”. She has no class.

When all is said and done over the shutdown, Trump will have a huge national audience to explain his side of it and point out the Democrats’ malfeasance.

Point taken

Read post 81 to say ‘convene’ rather than ‘call into session’.

What do you think “assemble” means? It’s the same as convene which means he has the power to CALL EITHER OR BOTH HOUSES TO CONVENE, i.e. meet.

This may be the rare occasion in which CNN got it right. In the SOTU controversy, as with the FISA declassification and the National Emergency at the border, Trump bluffed, got called, then folded. The Deep State and the Dems walked away with the chips. I hope and pray that I’m wrong, but I don’t see an effective strategy being deployed on these issues.

There was a report posted here late last night about acting Chief of Staff Mick Mulvaney reaching out to executive branch department heads to have them send him reports about how they foresee their operations working if the shutdown lasts until May.
___________________________________________________________

The “until May” timeframe tells me that the RIF option is being considered. A RIF requires a 60-day notice. So assuming the 60 day notice period expires May 1, Trump could trigger the RIF anytime until the end of February.

Today’s Senate vote should help clarify if the Dems (at least the Senate Dems) will cave, or if they are totally throwing the furloughed workers under the bus.

I would suggest the RIF AND then build the wall using the current statutory authority identified by Rep. Meadows of the Freedom Caucus, and not declaring a national emergency (not required). Leaning on plain text existing statute that gives explicit authority to build fences or barriers to help stop international drug trafficking is very clear.

There’s a very good reason Trump has been laser-focused on crime and drugs across the border. It’s directly linked to the statute.

Win? Really? She just set the stage for all future congress/presidential interactions. What they have done to President Trump will be done to their guy or gal.

Do you really think that Republicans have the fortitude to do this to a Democrat President, or any Democrat?

Heck, Republicans are worse on their own people than with any Democrat they face. Republicans cast aside, terminate, refuse to fund, and publicly condemn anyone the media challenges them with.

Wrong. Because their person will always be from a protected species. It will never be a white male. So the republicans will always cower.

“She’s flying with the great unwashed and if she’s flying into and out of Reagan National, she’s also got a stop over which would require a change in planes.”

I’ve flown direct from Reagan to SFO first class. Nice flight. Wish it were longer.

So POTUS showed Nancy ( by virtue of her position) and the House some respect by not turning this into mud wrestling

Denied Pelosi her martyrdom as a steamrolled SOH

Ball is now in the democrats’ court
What’s her play? More petulance?
Trump is genius

It was Alaska, several years ago.

I like Reagan because it is reasonably sized and well located.
