Indeed. And it’s not just the basics. There is more than one way to learn, but many teachers only know how to teach their way. Some kids just need to think about the topic in a different way - which could be easily accessible with a more decentralized source.
They have everything over at udemy.com and that’s the direction our public schools should go for
Bernie is a perennial All Star Socialist (ASS).
We need a national minimum wage for ALL professions of $100/hr, plus Unemployment Wages of $100/hr * 40 hrs/wk for all who are unable or unwilling to work.
Better yet, who needs a Federal law? Instead get the UN to make it a worldwide law, and wipe out global poverty forever with the stroke of a pen.
Ignoring the more idiotic, broad brush hyperbole that seems to haunt every teacher thread on FR, let me say this.
There are less than 1000 mlb players. They are the very best in the world at a very popular skill. They get paid so much because they are worth it to their employers.
There are nearly 4 million teachers in the US.
Supply and demand.
Now Bernie isn't worthy of his net worth, let him donate a couple of his houses and some cash before he goes after the ball players.
I wonder why he didn't use rappers as his example?
Think of the dozens of teachers you had in all of the years you went to school. How many do you remember that made a difference? If you are lucky, maybe 2 or 3. They didn’t get paid more than the dozens that you have forgotten and quite possibly less.
I taught for over 30 yearsand still sub. IMO the ability to teach is much more an art and a gift rather than a science. It is not rewarded as perhaps it should be, but such is life. In the public school system salary is based solely on years taught and graduate hours completednot on results or how well one does one’s job.
Why can't we pay teachers as much as we pay politicians?
Mayber Bernie forgot that in the former Soviet Union, taxi drivers made more than doctors.
And they are very inefficient. Many school districts spend a tremendous amount of money per student, but still claim they have insufficient funds. A lot of money gets spent on top level administrators - even above the level of principals.
In one NH district with 5290 students, they spent over 5 million dollars just on the Superintendent and his staff. That is 966 dollars per student. Just to supervise the principals.
88 comments and nobody has yet asked why he picked baseball players instead of say...the NBA
I wonder why that would be...
Well, if a teacher could hit .400 the world would be their oyster.
Plus, there are what, a thousand MLB players? If there were only 1,000 teachers you can bet they would be paid more.
Hell no.
We are in a world of pain in this country because of leftist takeover of the schools and libraries.
We should stop paying teachers and let parents organize private schools and find teachers.
No more free ride.
How much are the teachers unions paying him?
Poor Communist has no clue how Capitalism works. If teachers want to make more money there are plenty of occupations that pay more.
If they want to compete with baseball, let them sell tickets.
‘Teachers educate the children.’
LOL. I’m also old enough to remember when that was true.
Bernie members of Congress enrich themselves from the day they get elected and many, like you and Elizabeth Warren, become millionaires while serving in Congress. How about a 70% tax rate for members of Congress worth over $1 million and have Congress members be forced to get their healthcare at the VA?
Close all government ‘schools’ and end the K-12 lobotomy...
There are only about 500 people having the skill set required to play major league baseball. There many hundreds of thousands of people having the skill set required to be a public school teacher. Comrade Bernie does not understand basic economics.
